...an evolution in sport. |
Greetings!
We're now well into our Spring Session and glad to welcome everybody back. Its been fantastic to see the little ones come back with a whole new passion for sport.
Vancouver's experience during the Olympics and Paralympics was a powerful demonstration of the potential to bring people together and build community through sport and being active.
Congratulations and thank you to Jump! families who participated as torch bearers, athletes, volunteers or simply as the most enthusiastic cheering section Canada has ever seen.
We've got an exciting spring and summer planned at Jump! I'm happy to welcome Kelly, Nada, Sara, Connie and Gen to our team (more on them below) and announce our upcoming summer camp schedule and Term 4 registration. Term 4 is shorter than usual due to our winter break - all classes will be prorated accordingly.
We've got some important information about our new registration policy, HST and upcoming cuts to the education system. Please give the newsletter a quick read.

New 'Change My Spot' Registration Policy
With over 400 children registered and most classes reaching capacity we've had to revise our 'Change My Spot' policy so that in the event that we are not able to accommodate all requests we have a fair way of determining the order that requests are met.Starting in Term 4 'Change My Spot' Registration will be accepted via email only starting at 9am PST April 18th. We will work to accommodate requests in the order that they are received.
'Save my Spot' Registration will continue as before via paper slips handed out in class or email. New Jump! families can register online, over the phone or in person.

New Members of the Jump! Team
We're happy to welcome Kelly, Sara, Nada, Connie and Gen to the Jump! Team. Kelly is a former Physical Education teacher from New Zealand, Sara has a background in Human Kinetics, Nada has coached children for a number of years and is just starting teacher training, Connie's passion is working with children with disabilities and developmental delays and Gen just finished her Douglas College practicum with us and will be working at Jump! one day a week while she completes her degree. They'll quickly pick up your little one's name, but please do take the opportunity to introduce yourself if you see them around.
They each bring some great skills and a passion for working with children to the Jump! team. You will find more complete bios for each of them here.

Harmonized Sales Tax
Harmonized Sales Tax will be introduced in BC effective July 1st. It will apply to all services, which include Jump! classes.
There are some peculiarities about how it applies for purchase of future services so we wanted to make sure Jump! families had the scoop.
If you are pre-purchasing a service ie/ a class that is scheduled for after June 30th the following applies:
- Services paid for prior to May 1st will be exempt from HST.
- Services paid for after May 1st but that will not be used until after June 30th must be charged HST.
- HST applies to any services purchased after June 30th.

Impact of Cuts to Public Education
As you will have seen in the news, Vancouver School District is facing an $18 million funding shortfall for the coming school year, and other districts are in similar positions
When school returns in September it will look very different: some schools will probably be closed, staff will be laid off (particularly outside core instruction areas) and changes to the school calendar will result in, amongst other things, a shorter lunch hour.
The impacts will be tremendous and will continue to be felt in coming years. Amongst many areas of concern, one area we are particularly keeping an eye on at Jump! is on the impact on children's fitness. Physical Education instruction time is already far below ideal and will only suffer more with the need to make drastic cuts outside core instruction areas. When you add in the shortened lunch hour children will have far less time to be active during the school day.
As parents we are all of course tremendously concerned. If you would like to write a letter in support of fully funding our schools you can find more information here.
And, keep in mind next fall that your kids might need a bit more time to just run around each day. | |

Jump! Gymnastics' carefully designed curriculum is intended to give children the tools they need to be successfully active for their whole lives, regardless of what sports interest them as they grow.
We offer children from six months to eight years old the opportunity to explore movement through activities that enhance balance, strength, flexibility, coordination and agility. We are an evolution in sport.
