Greetings!

Happy birthday to us...It was one year ago today that Jump! Gymnastics opened its doors.  What an amazing year its been. We started last September with 130 registered students. Now we have over 300, with Fall session registration still climbing. As a result, we've added more classes (including some new evening and weekend times this session) and welcomed three new staff during the year(more about Sally Piesse the newest member of the Jump! team below).

You are a big part of our success - we really appreciate all the enthusiastic recommendations Jump! families have given us out in the community.

And thank you for all your generous feedback and ideas, we learned a lot this year. We've got big plans for a fun-filled second year!

Fall is a big time for changes. The biggest change we see here is the move from Jump! Two to Jump!Three so we've included some thoughts below on helping your child make that transition. Of course these tips can be applied anywhere: new daycare, starting preschool/kindergarten etc.

Thank you once again for your support and we look forward to seeing you and your children back at Jump! this fall.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Hood
Director, Jump! Gymnastics

Succesful Transitions

Setting Them Up For Successful Transitions

Independent 3!The transition from parent participation Jump! Two to independent Jump! Three is a huge change for your average little person. Here are some hints of things you can do to ease the way.

While they are still in Jump! Two
  • Expect them to respect Jump! safety rules such as one at a time on the trampoline, jumping in one direction on the tumbling track etc. When they're slow little toddlers it doesn't seem like they can do much damage to each other, but they certainly can when they are bigger and faster. Waiving the rules at the beginning makes it harder for them to follow them on their own later on.
  • Practice being three - "When you are in Jump! Three you'll be able to do the class without mom/dad - how about I sit over against the wall and you do the circuit on your own so you can see what it feels like to be three?"

When they are ready for Jump! Three
  • Jump! coaches will always introduce themselves but  kids often have a hard time remembering names in new situations - tell them the name of their coach beforehand, introduce them to their coach on the first day, and always use her name when talking about the class. Repetition brings comfort!
  • Talk to your child about how class will be different beforehand: "You'll get to go into the gym with only Coach _____and the kids. Moms and dads will stay outside the gate. You will start the class with circle time and then you'll do circuits just the same as always. Coach _____will be there to help you."
  • The hardest part of Jump! Three is often leaving for the first time, or even first several times. Some children might need you to join in for circle time while others will quite happily give you a high five at the gate and never look back.
    • Instead of asking permision, give choices ie/ Instead of  "Do you want me to stay" or "Is it ok if I go now", try "Would you like me to join you for circle time or watch from the lounge?", "Would you like me to leave now or after circle time?".
    • Do What You Say You'll Do  - Saying you'll go and then staying might seem comforting at the time but longterm it creates uncertainty "Are they really going to go/stay this time or not". Certainty helps your child feel comfortable. If you are uncertain that you'll be able to leave the first time then use "watching from the lounge" as the second choice.
    • No Sneaky Escape - They might not notice you leave, but they will notice your absence. Again, certainty breeds confidence!
  •  Be Patient - Independent three might take a little while, it will come faster if they don't pick up on your frustration.
  • If you don't think they are ready for independent classes, try another session in Jump! Two - not every child is ready at the same time, that's ok.

Date Night - Jump! to the Rescue

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is an organization near and dear to us at Jump! Each year we make a donation to their 65 Roses Gala Auction (Nov. 7th).

This year we're putting together a Vancouver Family Essentials gift basket. Of course we'll start it off with some Jump! Goodies, but we're hoping that there are some Jump! Families who'd like to pitch in to make it super special.

If your business or your employer would like to contribute gift certificates or new products for families or kids (or even something special for a deserving mom or dad) please contact us. All contributors will be listed on the gift basket.

Vote for Jump! SavvyMom Awards

Savvy Mom Mom Entrepreneur

VOTE BEFORE SEPTEMBER 12th!

We've been nominated for Savvy Mom's Mom Entrepreneur of the Year award!
Please Vote for Us.

Winning the Savvy Mom award will help us take our approach out into the community, and jumpstart a public discussion about changing Canada's approach to childhood physical fitness.

We opened Jump! because we believe that Canada's sports specialization approach is not giving our children the tools they need to stay active for life. While we're tremendously happy with Jump!'s growth in our first year we'd love to be able to reach more children.

Please take one moment right now to
vote for us, and then forward this to your family and friends and ask them to do the same!

We can do more to keep our children active and healthy!

 New staff
New on the Jump! Team.

Sally Puisse is joining us this session with her patient, positive persistence. She will be coaching Sundays and Mondays. Sally is a triathelete whose current goal is to compete in the Xterra World Triathlon Championships. She coached gymnastics and triathlon in the United Kingdom, and was also a physical education teacher. Sally's coaching focus is on making learning fun as the best way to avoid burn out and help keep kids active.
