Greetings!
Evolution in Sport Tips: Be Careful vs. Pay Attention
Summer often means a whole new bunch of physical activities for the little ones; and as much as we love to see them tearing about there are times when it feels like a visit to emergency is in the cards. It can be quite the balancing act to both encourage our children's active exploration and keep them safe. One trick we've found that has helped us find that balance is a simple change in language. Instead of saying "be careful of...", try "pay attention to...". "Be careful," tells your child that what they are doing is inherently dangerous and out of their control; it can make them fearful and hesitant to explore. "Pay attention" on the other hand is very empowering. It says "There are risks out there, but I know you have the skills to navigate them". By drawing their attention to potential risks and helping them learn how to interpret and respond, you are helping your child learn how to evaluate and manage risk. A child with these skills is far more likely to stay active in the moment and make smart decisions when you aren't there to look out for them. So lather them up with sunscreen, fill their water bottle, plonk on the hat and let the monkeys play. Happy Summer! Sincerely,

We've been nominated for Savvy Mom's Mom Entrepreneur of the Year award! Winning the Savvy Mom award will help us take our approach out into the community, and jumpstart a public discussion about changing Canada's approach to childhood physical fitness. We opened Jump! because we believe that Canada's sports specialization approach is not giving our children the tools they need to stay active for life. While we're tremendously happy with Jump!'s growth in our first year we'd love to be able to reach more children. Please take one moment right now to vote for us, and then forward this to your family and friends and ask them to do the same! We can do more to keep our children active and healthy! |
