Step Up for Students Scholarship News
Step Up logoWe have been notified that the Step Up for Students 2012-13 school year application season will begin one month earlier than in years past for renewal and new families. Beginning in early February, renewal families can log into www.stepupforstudents.org and begin a scholarship application for the following school year. One month later, in early March, online application to new families will open. Like last year, renewal families are asked to complete the online application and submit their documents as early as possible. Those families that complete their application, submit supporting documentation and pay the application fee by March 30th will likely receive notification of an award or denial prior to the start of the school year.

The program is opening the application season earlier to better accommodate the spike in demand the program has seen for the last couple of years. By last May, just two months after the program started taking applications for the current school year, about 12,000 students had joined a waiting list. There are currently about 38,000 students enrolled in the program receiving scholarships worth up to $4,011.

The Customer Contact Center is extending the hours of operation, too. Beginning in early February, the Contact Center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, closing from 11 a.m. to noon every day. Families calling to inquire about their application can call 877-735-7837 for assistance.

The application fee is $30. The individual amount of the scholarship is expected to increase but won't be determined until the end of Florida's Legislative session in March. As soon as a final amount is determined, applicants will be notified.

If you know of someone who could benefit from this scholarship, please feel free to pass this information along. For more information about the program, please click here.

Anti-Bullying Program and Parent Survey
St. Anastasia Catholic School, along with all of the other schools in our Diocese, are participating in an important initiative within the Catholic Diocese of Palm Beach to further our commitment to teaching positive Catholic/Christian values in our schools while promoting the safety and well being of our Catholic school students. As co-partners with you in the education of your children, we constantly strive to provide an environment for learning which reflects the Gospel which we strive to imitate.

Across the country, public and private schools alike are combating a growing problem among young people -- that of inappropriate social and Internet behavior. Recognizing the challenges we face in dealing with this dangerous trend, the Catholic Diocese of Palm Beach is seeking to implement a comprehensive bullying prevention and response program in all 21 Catholic schools within our five-county diocese. A team comprised of leadership from around the diocese has been established to work together on this critical initiative and to collaborate with diocesan leadership staff. This staff includes the Chancellor, the Superintendent of Catholic Schools, and the Coordinator for the Office of Serving Children, as well as an outside professional expert, Sameer Hinduja, Ph.D., Co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University.

The initial step in this process is the administration of a survey to better understand the prevalence of bullying and cyberbulling behaviors, and to help inform where we need to direct personnel, resources, and expertise as we work to enhance student safety and well-being while also promoting safe learning environments. This survey will serve to collect quantitative and qualitative data, which will then specifically guide the prevention and response initiatives and strategies we implement. Without the data, we cannot make meaningful improvements in the areas that are revealed to need it.

Over the last several months drafts of the survey were pilot-tested at different grade levels, and the survey was revised accordingly. The age appropriate surveys have recently been administered across the diocese for students in 4th through 12th grade.

The purpose of this survey is to find out about bullying/harassment experiences of your child at school. This information will be used by the principal and teachers to help them understand where vulnerabilities are and help them promote an environment of respect, safety, and belonging for all students. We are not collecting your name or any identifying information from you, and the answers you provide to the survey questions cannot be linked to your child or anyone else in any way. We are simply interested in learning the perspectives of our parents.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this survey, please contact:

Catholic Schools Week 2012
CSW

The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is "Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service." The theme expresses three priorities that make Catholic schools stand out from other educational institutions. Children learn about faith-not just basic Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. They concentrate on academics, which in Catholic schools are held to the highest standards, so they can reach their highest potential. They practice service-giving time, talent and effort to help others-as an expression of both faith and good citizenship. This combined focus on faith, academics and service prepares students for full and meaningful lives.

We are pleased to announce our Catholic Schools Week agenda for 2012:

First Grade News

Mrs. Bush's first grade class celebrated the "Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting" for their new "Town" on Tuesday with Mrs. Richmond as the honorary Ribbon Cutter! Their town is complete with a post office, cafe, library, church, fire department, pet store, hospital and grocery store. In the grocery store, the students can use money from their math class to purchase food items. The grocery store items consist of empty food boxes and containers that the children recycled from home.

In order to send letters from the post office, students must earn money in the classroom for things like helping, good behavior and completing work to "purchase" stamps and paper (at the town paper store, of course) to be able to write and mail their letters.

These activities span across the first grade curriculum as they are using math, writing, language arts and social studies. Students can also work in the town as the banker who is in charge of the money for that day. The deputy mayor for the first day was Angel-Uriel Chihuahua.
