Pinwheels for "Whirled" Peace
As part of the International Day of Peace, St. Anastasia Catholic School participated in Pinwheels for Peace today. Peace Day has marked our personal and planetary progress toward peace and is celebrated across the world. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project allowing students to express their feelings about what's going on in the world and in their lives. Our students created colorful pinwheels during their art time and students in the third grade, joined by Mrs. Vercillo's kindergarten class, "planted" the Pinwheels for Peace in the Courtyard after a short Prayer Service and Blessing with Deacon Jack.

PTO News ~ Box Top Collection Update
| |
It's time to get collecting and save those Box Tops, Campbell's Labels and Coke Rewards! Our collections program is a fun and easy way to help support St. Anastasia School! All you have to do is clip Box Tops coupons from hundreds of family products from brands like Cheerios®, Betty Crocker®, Pillsbury®, Ziploc®, Kleenex®, Juicy Juice® and more, cut the labels on any Campbell's products, and/or save the bottle caps from any Coke product!
Simply collect Box Tops, Coke Rewards and Campbell's labels and turn them in! That's it! Each room will have a collection box and students will simply deposit their items in the box. Boxes will be gathered on the deadline date for each co ntest to be counted.
Each quarter, classes will compete to collect the most Box Tops. There will be special contests along the way, so be sure to listen for classroom standings and other special contest information!!
It really is that simple! Please send items in separate, labeled Ziploc bags to help make our counters' job easier. Doing your part to help support our school can make a difference so let's get collecting!

Family & Business Directory
| St. Anastasia Catholic School is supportive of local businesses and our family-owned businesses. In fact, we would like to encourage our families to participate in the PTO Spaghetti Dinner and Business Expo on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. in the auditorium.
The PTO is also coordinating and updating the 2011-12 Family and Business Directory with a goal of having the printed document available for distribution at the dinner. To have your business information included in this year's directory, please fill out the form attached here.
Last chance...All families should make any necessary updates to the current directory by filling out the attached form. Both forms are due to the front office no later than Friday, Sept. 23.
In an effort to reduce the amount paperwork sent home in the Thursday folders, anyone wishing to promote a business or event will be given the opportunity to place flyers in the front lobby with prior approval from Dr. Hoeffner. We will allow copies of flyers to remain in the school lobby for up to two weeks.

A message from Dr. Hoeffner regarding the third season of sports:
School Mission: The St. Anastasia School and Church Community believe each student is unique child of God, called to achieve excellence by nurturing the mind, body, and spirit in the image and likeness of God.
Our mission calls the school staff and parents to nurture the whole child (mind, body, and spirit). The athletics and physical education that takes place at our school are essential to developing the bodies and character of our children as they develop into young adults. The coaches and administration of the school believe that athletic competition promotes teamwork, nutrition, time management, character building, determination, and many other positive characteristics not mentioned here. Sports promote social and physical development while preparing our middle school students for more competitive high school sports. St. Anastasia School desires to begin this structured development in 5th and 6th grade and increase the competition in 7th and 8th grades. If all works as planned we provide physically and socially prepared athletes for a smooth transition into the John Carroll High School sports program.
The school belongs to the Treasure Coast Athletic Conference (TCAC) that is made up of 11 private schools that are located between Hobe Sound and Vero Beach. We have competitive JV and Varsity teams in our first and second seasons which include soccer, volleyball, and basketball. Girls and boys from 5th - 8th grades can try out for these sports. With the $100 per sport fee that we charge and campus resources that we are blessed with, we currently provide competitive athletics to 113 students within the first and second seasons. We are always looking for ways to provide competitive athletics to more students in our middle school.
In our fourth season, we provide tennis and golf and we are looking for ways to extend the practice time of this short season and the age groups that we serve. Please speak to our Athletic Director, Coach Jo if you are interested in assisting with developing our golf and tennis programs in the spring.
The $100 athletic fee that is charged now does not completely pay for the cost of officials, travel, uniforms, maintenance, insurance, coach salaries, and minor equipment. The income received from our aftercare program helps to support the remaining cost of the athletics program. If we wish to continue growing our athletic program, we need your continued support, through pavilion banners that are sold to local businesses and other donations that do not compete with the existing fundraisers at the school.
In addition to the Physical Education time that all students are provided in grades K-8, we also provide our facilities to a volunteer group of parents who organizes the Junior Athletic League (JAC) on most Saturday mornings during the school year. The JAC is now playing t-ball and will also play soccer and basketball later in the year. This is a non-competitive environment that is meant to provide team-building, basic skills, and a family environment to get to know each other better. Lastly, I would like your opinion on the third season (February-March) of competitive athletics that we provide. We will not be considering baseball for the third season due to the lack of local middle school competition. Within our small conference of teams, we have recently witnessed many schools choosing to support lacrosse instead of boys' flag football and girls' softball. We currently compete in flag football (7th and 8th grades) and softball (5th-8th grades) and have dominated the very limited competition that is left playing these sports in our conference. Due to the schools in our conference who are choosing to play lacrosse and also in part to the success of lacrosse at John Carroll High School, we are strongly considering switching to boys and girls lacrosse teams (6th-8th grades). The athletes will be responsible for the expense of pads, helmets, cleats, sticks, and other supplies for lacrosse. Although competition is limited, we are still willing to remain with the current third season sports of girls' softball and boys' flag football. If you are interested in having a voice in this decision, I encourage you to send me a brief email to share your opinions. We have had multiple conversations on this subject over the past few years. I have appreciated the thoughts and opinions that I have received thus far. Please include your positive support as well as your concerns and place "Athletics - Third Season" in your subject line so that I can sort the responses by subject. I look forward to hearing from you. Dr. Kevin Hoeffner khoeffner@stanna.org |

Did you know that St. Anastasia School operates a thrift shop named Anastasia's Attic? Our Thrift Shop helps St. Anastasia School in many different ways. Funds from the Attic help with the school's budget, provide scholarships and help the teachers with items they would otherwise have to purchase.
The Attic is doing great because of YOU! Your donations keep the Attic in business. Please continue to donate your gently used items.
The Attic is in need of volunteers. The time you spend at the Attic can be applied towards your required volunteer hours. If you can work all day, or just a few hours, your time is appreciated. The shop is open 7 days a week, so if you have a full time job, you can volunteer during the weekend. Call Maria, the manager, at 467-1444 to help.
