Operation Rice Bowls and Lent
Fifth Week of Lent - I Will Put My Spirit In You That You May Have Life
The scriptures this weekend are rich with the theme that God brings the dead to life. God has made us all to share life with Him, and so all humans have rights and responsibilities to the basic goods of the earth. In Kenya and elsewhere, Catholic Relief Services' Operation Rice Bowl helps people receive the basic right of an education.

Congratulations to Mrs. Steele's 4th Grade class who is actively participating in the spirit of giving during Lent. Their class started a jar

that says, "Let's Make a Change for Lent!"  They have been putting their snack money in it to help the Catholic Relief Services feed the hungry.  They have raised $88.28 and there's still time to collect!

If you answered yes, please take a proactive approach to safety and "log on" to their page.Monitoring your child's activity is extremely important!

Conversations on Facebook and other social networking sites are not private, as information is easily passed from one person to another. As parents, a pro-active approach to monitoring these sites is the best approach to take. The administration at St. Anastasia School, along with the School Resource Officer, will pursue any and all information that is given to us regarding hurtful or disrespectful communications on social networking sites.

Thank you for your continued support!

News from the Diocese of Palm Beach

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and

Protecting Children is Everyone's Job!

DID YOU KNOW?
Internet Safety for Kids
The Internet has become the new schoolyard for child molesters seeking girls or boys to victimize. Internet "chat rooms" provide a teenager with an opportunity to engage in a "live" conversation with friends from school or church, or with other teenagers from around the world. A chat room is similar to an old-style telephone party line, except that the teens are typing. Law enforcement has found that child molesters use chat rooms to gain easy and safe access to teens and now pre-teens. Because of the seemingly caring and seductive talent of child molesters, teenagers should be warned that when they are in a chat room, they should never provide anyone with private information, personal information, and especially their specific physical location.

DID YOU KNOW?
Cyber Tip-line Fights Internet Crimes Against Children
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other government agencies all work together to fight Internet crimes against children. They've established a "Cyber Tip-line," a reporting mechanism for cases of child sexual exploitation including child pornography, online enticement of children for sex acts, molestation of children outside the family, sex tourism of children, child victims of prostitution, and unsolicited obscene material sent to a child. Reports may be made - 24 hours per day, seven days per week - online at www.cybertipline.com or by calling (800) 843-5678.

DID YOU KNOW?
IOW, Knowing Internet Lingo Can Help Parents Safeguard Kids
Online chat rooms, instant messaging systems, and even cell phones equipped to send text messages are environments rich in abbreviations, acronyms, and other shorthand that help increase the speed of communication. Parents need to become aware of some of the common lingo that is used in these environments. Some of these terms may be found to be vulgar, degrading, or otherwise offensive. However, parents and educators need to have a level of understanding of the dangers that face our children.

DID YOU KNOW?
Internet Spammers Target Kids, Too
Does your child know what to do when he or she gets an e-mail from an unknown person? If you are allowing your children to communicate with others online, be aware that they will be exposed to spam. The easiest way to avoid spam is to make sure that your children do not give out their personal information or e-mail address to anyone they do not know. Adjust the security settings on their e-mail account to filter or block unwanted messages. Encourage your children to delete any message they get from any one they don't know. Even when your children get e-mail or instant messages from people they know, make sure that they scan everything they are downloading for viruses first. You can do this by making sure that you have your antivirus software up to date.

Red Cross Babysitting Class Information

One of our St. A's parents, Mrs. Jen Richmond, recently spoke with a representative at the Red Cross regarding a program called "Babysitting Boot Camp." It is a 2-day class from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. held at their facility. The class is offered for young people 11-15 (boys are welcome, also). On the first day they go over basic childcare (feeding, bathing, changing, diapers, etc), how to be a responsible sitter, safety and such topics. On the second day, they go through the infant/child CPR program and receive their certificates at the end of the day. Lunch is provided. The cost is $130 for the 2 days.

If any parent is interested in having their child attend this training, the next session is being held either in Port St. Lucie or Vero Beach on June 28 & 29. They need a minimum of 6 attendees to go forward with a class. However, if there are at least 8 attendees, Red Cross can send a trainer to a location of our choice (on campus or other).

If anyone is interested in attending this class at a location of our choice, please contact Mrs. Jen Richmond at (772) 473-1155 or jenmr729@bellsouth.net.
