Jog-A-Thon News

The next Turn In Day is Thursday, Jan. 27 - students who turn in any amount of pledges will get ONE Hershey Bar!

The St. Anastasia Catholic School Jog-A-Thon is Friday, Feb. 4th. This event is a very important fundraiser for the school and we need every student's participation in order for us to succeed. Our school goal is $20,000 and we can reach that goal if each student turns in at least $40 in pledges.

The Jog-A-Thon is a fun event that involves students in kindergarten through 8th grade. Each student obtains pledges, either by lap or as a single pledge, and on the day of the event, runs laps around a track. The laps are counted and students are eligible to win prizes based on how many laps they run. Pledges are then tallied and mailed to the sponsors for payment.

We have two more Turn-In Days left:

  • Thursday, Jan. 27 (by 9 a.m.) - Hershey Bar Day!

  • Thursday, Feb. 3

The deadline to turn in pledges is 9 a.m. on Thursday, February 3.

Remember: In order to participate in the Jog-A-Thon, students must turn in at least $10 in pledges.

Students should wear P.E. clothes (or Catholic Schools Week t-shirts) and tennis shoes on the day of the event. The students really enjoy this event, so we encourage you to involve them in obtaining pledges from family members and friends! We would also like to invite you to join us for the Jog-a-Thon - bring a lawn chair and watch the festivities! Or, if you need volunteer hours, this is a great opportunity to help! Don't forget that this day (Friday, Feb. 4) is a noon dismissal, too. Thank you ahead of time for your continued support and generosity! If you have any questions, please contact me at ltrabulsy@stanna.org or 461-2232.

Eighth Grade News

Last week, the eighth-graders participated in the famous Mr. Odom Egg Drop experiment - and we're not talking about soup! The students constructed a carrier to transport a raw egg from the second floor landing to the first floor. The object of the science experiment was to drop the egg and have the carrier protect it from cracking. Some succeeded...others did not!

Sixth Grade News

Congratulations to the winners of the St. Anastasia Catholic School Science Fair! These students worked very hard on their projects.

Mrs. Stapleton guided the students through the process which began in the fall. According to her, "This was an opportunity to gain 'hands on' experience and knowledge in an independent field of study through the investigation of a scientific problem. This investigation involves research and experimentation to answer a proposed question by means of the 'Scientific Method.' It is a unique way for students to satisfy their own curiosity about the world around them and to pose questions for which they must seek out answers."

The students learned about scientific method and how to research a topic. Mrs. Camber taught the students about the APA format needed for the project and Mrs. Dohrer helped the students learn graphing programs necessary for completing the graphing component of the project. The Science Fair project was worked on in phases: In October, the first part of the project was due where students had to identify the Problem they were going to experiment with. The second step of the project was to research their topic which was due in November. The logbook, hypothesis, materials, procedures, table of contents, and reference page was due in late November. The final project was handed in on January 11 and the winners are: Alyssa Ellwood, Kaitlin Zrallack, Madison O'Loughlin, Taylor Leander, Kaitlyn Richmond, Jessica Goldstein, Austin Krauza, Beck Fox and Chad Vachon.

Scouting News
St. Anastasia Catholic School Cub Scout Pack 473 camped at Jonathan Dickenson State Park over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. The children learned about the different forest ecologies of the park for the Webelos Forestry pin. This included two nature hikes and a class on snakes. The scouts touched a red corn snake, named "Red," and a Florida pine snake named "JD." Several of the scouts also held JD.

Camping in the park was an adventure! They were visited by three deer Friday night! On the Saturday morning hike, they saw tracks of raccoons, dogs (coyotes?), and a bear! Saturday evening they saw more deer after the twilight nature hike! Of course, no deer visited camp Saturday but that might have been because of the noise they made with all the fun they were having! According to Mrs. Bertram, a St. A's parent and Cub Scout Leader, "It was a great Scout event with family and we look forward to camping again soon!"
