Congratulations!

Congratulations to St. Anastasia Catholic School's Varsity Gold Volleyball Team as they won the Treasure Coast Athletic League's Division I Tournament on Oct. 21. The team defeated the Pine School in three games in the finals of the tournament, 14-25, 26-24 and 15-13. The team's record was 14-3 and Coach Lowell Odom said, "The team played with a lot of courage and character because they had to play from behind. It was a great team effort!"

Congratulations to the Junior Varsity Soccer Team as they were Runners Up in the Treasure Coast Athletic League's (TCAC) Tournament on Oct. 23. The team defeated St. Joseph Catholic School 1-0 in the first round and lost to the Pine School in the finals. Coach Steve Utter said, "I cannot say enough about the progress this young team of fifth and sixth graders have shown for the 2010 soccer season. Every player worked hard in practice and this really showed on game day! Looking back on game number one and now seeing the competitive skilled play during the final tournament games made me very proud of everyone on the team.  These young players represented their school in a fashion all of us can be proud of. They played the final games with such poise and strong sportsmanship, not to mention true soccer skill I was truly inspired and proud to be a part of this experience. To all the players and parents, thank you for your dedication and support. To the sixth graders, good luck on varsity next year and to the fifth graders, be ready to lead the team to another successful season."

Congratulations to the Junior Varsity Volleyball Team on their third place finish in the TCAC tournament last weekend. In the tournament, the team beat St. Edward's to advance, but lost to St. Joseph's for a chance to play for the championship game. The team's record for the season was 10-3 and Coach Steve Goldstein said, "I am so proud of this team and how well the girls played in the tournament and all season. I was also blessed with a super supportive group of parents."

Congratulations to the Varsity Blue Volleyball team on a great season!

The team proved to be great competitors. The team was made up of mostly sixth graders, which is the first time we've ever had sixth graders on the varsity volleyball squad!  The team placed fourth in the Treasure Coast Athletic Conference tournament this year. According to Coach Theresa Goldstein, "Our team played with heart and determination. I am so proud of the progress these young ladies made!"

New Spanish Teacher(s)
As some of you may know, Mrs. Dolores Brieske, our Spanish Teacher, has resigned to pursue other opportunities. We are sad to see her go, but wish her the best of luck in her new venture.

We are blessed to have two "new" Spanish Teachers going forward. Mrs. Millie Mejia, who has been part of our staff for a couple of years, will be teaching Spanish for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.

For grades 6-8, Mrs. Manuela Ramirez will join our staff to teach Spanish. Mrs. Ramirez has her Masters in Education: Spanish Language and Literature Education. Additionally, she holds two Bachelor Degrees in Spanish Language and Literature Education as well as in Physical Education. She currently works part-time at Indian River State College and is pursuing her Doctorate from Miami University in Communications and Foreign Languages. We look forward to Mrs. Ramirez joining our staff. Please welcome her when you see her.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

The annual Thanksgiving Food drive, in partnership with St. Anastasia Catholic Church, gets underway on Nov. 1. Thanks to all of you who have helped make the food drive such a huge success in the past. This year has presented many challenges for all of us, yet our hearts still yearn to reach out to those less fortunate then ourselves. When we give sacrificially with a joyful heart, the return from God for our "investment" knows no limits.

This year, the Food Drive begins Monday and runs through November 19. Each grade level will be responsible for bringing in specific food items (see list below or click here to print out the list), however any and all donations are appreciated! We will need volunteers to help pack up the food baskets for distribution. If you are interested in helping, please call Darlene at the Parish Office at 461-2233.

Eighth Grade News

Ms. Fitzgerald's eighth grade religion class worked on a very interesting research project recently. The students did research on the Fathers and Doctors of the Church and presented what they learned using "Facebook" as a template. Many students are familiar with the Facebook format, so Ms. Fitzgerald had the students build from what they already knew and had them apply that to learning about the Catholic faith. There were many creative perspectives and "friends" included in the project. Ms. Fitzgerald said, "This project was a more creative way to learn than just writing a research paper."
