Jeans Day for Abby!

Abby Alonzo is a 5th grader here at St. Anastasia School. According to Abby's mom, Abby has Hodgkins Lymphoma, stage IV-B. They were at Palms West Hospital for 19 days waiting for a diagnosis and then spent a couple of weeks at St. Jude's in Memphis for treatment. Her mom says (and we agree), "Abby is handling it so well, she is an amazing young lady!"Abby

Abby and her mom are now back in Florida and hopefully, we will see Abby's smiling face back at school soon!

We are raising money to help offset some of the family's medical and travel-related expenses. For $2, children may wear jeans on Tuesday, Nov. 24. All of the money will go to the Alonzo Family.

Students may wear any appropriate shirt (see Parent/Student Handbook on the website at www.stanna.org for details). Students can wear jeans or jean Capri's but NO shorts! (The 2nd grade class that has a field trip must still wear their PE shirt, but can participate and wear jeans).

For more information, call the school office at 461-2232. You can sign Abby's guestbook on her blog at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/awesomeabby.

Volunteer Information
It is the policy of the Diocese of Palm Beach and St. Anastasia Catholic School to complete a background and fingerprint check on any parent/grandparent who wishes to be a volunteer at the school or a chaperone on school field trips. The parent/grandparent must also attend a Protecting God's Children workshop before they may volunteer. Protecting God's Children is a workshop on child sexual abuse.

Parents/grandparents will not be approved to volunteer or chaperone until we have received the results of a fingerprint background check and we have verification of attendance at a Protecting God's Children workshop.  The background check is valid for 5 years. Many of our parents are now due to have an updated fingerprint background check. You will receive a letter from Mrs. MacAdie letting you know that it is time for an update.

Please call or send a note to the office if you would like to request a Volunteer Packet. The packet will be sent home with your child. If you have any questions, please call the school office.

Congratulations to Art Teacher Maria McCadden!
McCadden

Sister Helene, left, welcomes the Adrian Domincan Sisters' newest Associate, Maria McCadden (right)

On November 15 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Port St. Lucie, the Adrian Dominican Sisters welcomed Maria McCadden as their newest Associate. Maria McCadden is a member of this Parish and an art teacher at St. Anastasia Catholic School in Fort Pierce, which was founded by the Adrian Dominican Sisters over 80 years ago.

Associates are men and women who share the Dominican charisms of study, service, prayer and community, and wish to formally enter a relationship with the Adrian Dominican Sisters. After at least one year of prayer, study, discernment and mentoring, Associates receive a pin, sign an Acceptance Agreement and become part of the Adrian Dominican family.  Associates embrace the Mission Statement of the Adrian Dominicans Sisters to seek truth, make peace and reverence life. Associates can be married, widowed, divorced or single and are involved in ministry in their parishes as well as with the Sisters. The Adrian Dominican Motherhouse is located in Adrian, Michigan, however, the Sisters and Associates are in Ministry throughout the United States, Canada and the Dominican Republic.

"In 1926, our Dominican Sisters came from Adrian to minister to the people at St. Anastasia. Now, 83 years later, we will have an Adrian Dominican Associate on the faculty to share her faith with the students," said Adrian Dominican Sister Helene Dompierre who served as Ms. McCadden's mentor during her formation process. "Maria will be a ray of sunshine to our Mission Group."

When asked why she chose to become an Associate for the Dominicans, Ms. McCadden replied, "In Luke's Gospel, a rich man, who had followed the commandments all his life, asked Jesus what more he should do. Jesus said 'Come, follow me.'" She continued, "I want to say "yes" to Jesus' call to discipleship! Becoming an Associate with the Adrian Dominican Sisters will allow me to both answer God's call and be a more effective witness to the Good News."

As an Adrian Dominican Associate, Maria will share the Mission of the Adrian Dominican Sisters. She is joining a dynamic faith community of nearly 200 Associates and 800 vowed Sisters. Together, Sisters and Associates become involved in issues of peace and justice and form community through ministry and through prayer and contemplation.

For information about the Adrian Dominican Sisters visit their website at www.adriandominicans.org, or call (517) 266-3400.
