ITBS Testing Next Week!

Attention parents! Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) testing begins MONDAY! It is very important that our students arrive on time throughout the week. Students who arrive after testing begins will not be permitted to enter the classrooms late. Don't be late, arrive by eight!

Also, please read the "testing tips" below. Plenty of rest, a nice breakfast, and a good morning routine will help our students achieve to the best of their ability! Go students, go!

Top Ten Test-Taking Tips for Students
Here are the top ten tips to success!
1. Have a Positive Attitude - Approach the big test as you'd approach a giant jigsaw puzzle. It might be tough, but you can do it!

2. Make a Plan - The week before the test, ask your teacher what the test is going to cover. If you've been absent, talk to friends about material you may have missed.

3. The Night Before - The night before the test you should get to bed early. Remember, your brain and body need sleep to function well, so don't stay up late!

4. The Morning of the Test - Did you know that you think better when you have a full stomach? So don't skip breakfast the morning of the test.

5. Test Time - Before the test begins, make sure you have everything you'll need - scratch paper, extra pencils, etc. Read the instructions! You want to make sure you are marking answers correctly.

6. Manage Your Time - Scan through the test quickly before starting. Answering the easy questions first can be a time saver and a confidence builder. Plus, it saves more time in the end for you to focus on the hard stuff.

7. I'm Stuck! - Those tricky problems can knock you off balance. Don't get worried or frustrated. Reread the question to make sure you understand it, and then try to solve it the best way you know how.

8. Multiple-Choice Questions - The process of elimination can help you choose the correct answer in a multiple-choice question. Start by crossing off the answers that couldn't be right. Then spend your time focusing on the possible correct choices before selecting your answer.

9. Neatness Counts -If your 4's look like 9's, it could be a problem. Be sure that your writing is legible and that you erase your mistakes. For machine-scored tests, fill in the spaces carefully.

10. I'm Done! - Not so fast - when you complete the last item on the test, remember that you're not done yet. First, check the clock and go back to review your answers, making sure that you didn't make any careless mistakes. Spend the last remaining minutes going over the hardest problems before you turn in your test.

Follow these test tips, and you'll know you did your best - congratulations!
Safari Day Fun in Pre-K
The children in Pre-K celebrated Safari Day last week. They were able to participate in "wild" activities, crafts and jungle-themed snacks. It was a wonderful way to reinforce the theme of Pre-K this year -- "Wild About Learning!" So far this year, the students have been studying safari habitats, animals and everything jungle!

Safari Day

Thomas Van Doorn and Sadie Rankin celebrate Safari Day in Pre-K.

Safari Crafts

Giavona DeMaio creates a "wild" stamp picture at the "Jungle Art" Center at Safari Day in Pre-K.

Ms. Mary SafariEven the "big kids" enjoy Safari Day! Ms. Mary shows off her "snake print" pants to Mrs. Vercillo! Ms. Mary takes care of the "Early Birds" and snacks, and enjoys joining in the fun on the special activity days.

Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who volunteered their time to help with Safari Day!

St. A's Family and Business Directory
St. Anastasia Catholic School and Church is a very blessed community! Do you realize we have restaurant owners, builders, doctors, dentists, plumbers, store owners, repair experts, insurance agents, hairdressers (just to mention a few) among us? Wouldn't it be great to support each other whenever possible?

This year we are updating our Family directory to include business information to support our St. Anastasia Business Community. Our first step is to collect business information by category, for example: Dentist, Contractor, Insurance, Builder, Restaurant, etc. An option we would like to include is any special incentives for St. Anastasia families, for instance: 10% when you mention you are from St. Anastasia or something appropriate for your business.

This is a free service to you, our St. A's families, and will be available on our website and printed copies will be available. If your business would like to be included in the St. Anastasia Catholic School Family and Business Directory, please click here and fill out the Business Directory form no later than Friday, Oct. 16. When complete, please return to Linette Trabulsy at ltrabulsy@stanna.org, drop it off to the front office or send in with your child (Attn: Development Office).

Again this year, we will be updating the Directory with Family contact information. If you would like your contact information to be included in this year's Family section of the Family and Business Directory, please complete the Family Directory Form on our website at www.stanna.org. You may provide us with all the information on the form or select only the information that you want included in the Directory. Please return this form to the school office no later than Friday, Oct. 16.

There are two forms to complete for this Directory.
1. The Family Directory Form needs to be filled out with your contact information for your family.
2. The Business Directory Form needs to be filled out if you have a business you work for/own and want to promote it to St. A's families. Both forms are on our website.
If you have questions, please contact Linette Trabulsy at 461-2232. Thanks for your support!

4th Grade News
Family Tree NeilMrs. Steele's 4th grade religion classes have been learning about the Biblical family tree that began when God created Adam and Eve. They have been documenting Adam and Eve's family tree and adding each of their descendents to it as they have learned about them. In order to extend their religion lessons from the classroom to their home life, the students were asked to create and design their own family tree in 3-D fashion. This project was beneficial because it asked the students to discover more about their family roots and give them some quality time with Mom and Dad discovering more about their own history.

St. Anastasia Church News

Rosary
The Living Rosary is an opportunity for the school to meditate on mysteries of the Lord. It is a simple devotion which can be said by all people. While we say the Our Father, ten Hail Marys and Glory to the Father, we think about great moments in the lives of Jesus and Mary. In this way, we grow closer and closer to Jesus and his Blessed Mother. We learn to imitate their holy lives.
