Welcome Mrs. Jennie Capezza, New Second Grade Teacher!
St. Anastasia Catholic School is pleased to introduce another one of the newest members of our faculty to you, Mrs. Jennie Capezza, the new second grade teacher.

Mrs. CJennie C. at open houseapezza is an active parishioner of St. Anastasia Catholic Church. Mrs. Capezza is married to Louis Capezza and they have two daughters, Kate and Abbey and a son, Luke. Kate and Abbey are identical twins who are seven-years-old and are in Mrs. Schildwachter's class this year. Luke is four years old and is in Mrs. Vercillo's class.

Mrs. Capezza attended Florida Atlantic University and taught third grade at White City Elementary for five years. Mrs. Capezza has enjoyed being a full-time Mom for the past eight years and is now eager to jump back into the wonderful world of teaching at Saint Anastasia School. She loves teaching creative writing and enjoys discovering new teaching techniques that will promote her student's unique learning styles. Mrs. Capezza's hobbies include boating with her family, cooking, and playing tennis.

Mrs. Capezza was hired to teach in the second grade as long-time second grade teacher, Mrs. Dale Cheries, has decided to take a leave of absence this year. Mrs. Cheries' daughter, Christie, needs surgery and Mrs. Cheries will be on hand for Christie's recovery and help care for her grandchildren. We hope that you will offer your support and prayers for her and her family. Mrs. Cheries is not retiring at this time, however, should she choose to retire at the end of the year, we will formally celebrate her transition when the time comes.

Protecting God's Children Workshop Scheduled
It is the policy of the Diocese of Palm Beach and St. Anastasia Catholic School to complete a background and fingerprint check on any parent who wishes to be a volunteer at the school or a chaperone on school field trips. The parent must also attend a Protecting God's Children workshop before they may volunteer. Protecting God's Children is a workshop on child sexual abuse.

Parents will not be approved to volunteer or chaperone until we have received the results of a fingerprint background check and we have verification of attendance at a Protecting God's Children workshop.

The background check is valid for 5 years. Many of our parents are now due to have an updated fingerprint background check. You will receive a letter from Mrs. MacAdie letting you know that it is time for an update.

Please call or send a note to the office if you would like to request a Volunteer Packet. The packet will be sent home with your child. If you have any questions, please call the school office at 461-2232.

Help Avoid Delays at Afternoon Pick-Up
To help the afternoon pick up line move faster, please make sure that you have a sheet of paper indicating your child's last name placed near the right side of the car's front window. We have an employee who will radio the child's name to the student waiting area. This allows the student to be at the driveway area when your vehicle arrives there. Thanks for your cooperation!
Homework Requests
We will gladly takes requests for homework if a student has missed 2 or more days of school. Requests should be called in to the office before 10:00 a.m. so the teacher has time to get the work together. It can be picked up that day after 2:00 p.m. in the office.

For your convenience, assignments are also on the school's website, www.stanna.org. This is probably the best way to access the student's assignments.

Pinwheels for Peace
The International Day of Pinwheels for PeacePeace was established by the UN in 1981 and celebrated for the first time in September of 1982. In a resolution in 2002, the General Assembly set September 21st as the permanent date for the International Day of Peace. Since its inception, Peace Day has marked our personal and planetary progress toward peace. It has grown to include millions of people in all parts of the world, and each year events are organized to commemorate and celebrate this day.

Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two Art teachers in Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for their students to express their feelings about what's going on in the world and in their lives.  The project was quickly embraced by their students and the entire school community and by millions of art teachers, teachers, parents, children and adults who desire peace in our world. This year the St. Anastasia School Community will be participating in Pinwheels for Peace to help us commemorate International Day of Peace on September 21, 2009.

Students will be creating their pinwheels during their art time & the installation will take place on September 21st with Pre-K and 6th grade students working together to "plant" our Pinwheels for Peace. If you would like to participate or help in some way with this school wide project please contact Ms. McCadden at mmccadden@stanna.org. Several parents will be needed to help put the pinwheels together. This is a wonderful opportunity for earning at home volunteer hours. For more about Pinwheels for Peace or the UN sponsored International Day of Peace click here.

Flu Prevention Information
Families, students and school staff can keep from getting sick with flu in three ways:
  • Practicing good hand hygiene. Students and staff members should wash their hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Practicing respiratory etiquette. The main way that the flu spreads is from person to person in the droplets produced by coughs and sneezes, so it's important to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.
  • Staying home if you're sick. Keeping sick students at home means that they keep their viruses to themselves rather than sharing them with others.
Students, staff, and their families must take personal responsibility for helping to slow the spread of the virus by practicing these steps to keep from getting sick with flu and protecting others from getting the flu.

For more information, visit the Center for Disease Control website at www.cdc.gov.
