Passport Students Achieve Success!

Passport, an enrichment, college prep and leadership development program for high school juniors and seniors is graduating its first cohort this month... and all 7 plan to attend college next year! This first cohort was instrumental for Passport, which grew to almost 40 students this year. The positive impact of Passport is inspiring us to dream big about how we can do more for youth and adults throughout Greater Boston! Reena Mathew, our Director of Youth Initiatives, took a few minutes to celebrate with us.

Reena: Students realize that Passport is more than just college-prep. All our program components - workshops on leadership and life skills, mentoring, special events, student-staff relationships-are complimentary and reinforce our values. One goal is to challenge our students to greater awareness of their purpose and understand their role as leaders in the community. The recent, student-initiated service trip to New Orleans is a tangible reflection of that goal. The seniors came to me wanting to do a service trip knowing I would support them... even though the trip wasn't part of the curriculum. They took ownership of the whole process by researching organizations, making travel plans and fundraising, but needed our church community to turn their dream into a reality. Being in relationship has given these students confidence to discover and pursue their desires.

Reena: When I interviewed the girls 2 years ago, it was apparent they were motivated, passionate, and had incredible e n e r g y . Seeing them grow through Passport both individually and as a community has been such a privilege. These girls have stolen a piece of my heart, and I'm so excited to stay in relationship with them and see how they impact the world in the future!
