Friends of NWAC Update

January 2009
Dear Friend of NWAC,

Happy New Year and welcome to the first 2009 update from the Friends of the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center.  Our goal with this e-mail is to keep you informed of what's happening in the world of Northwest avalanches.  This is not a substitute for daily avalanche forecasts.  Rather, we'll try to keep you up to date with educational offerings, tidbits of knowledge and of course the ways that you can get involved and help ensure that NWAC continues to thrive, and that avalanche education is made available to all who need it.

The December weather in the Cascades has resulted in some of the worst avalanche conditions in decades.  Cold weather, an initially weak snowpack in early-mid December, and more recent abundant snowfall have created a snowpack that is likely to be dangerous for some time.  These conditions are prevalent throughout the west right now and have already resulted in 12 avalanche fatalities in the US this winter, including a snowmobiler in the north Cascades and a low elevation roof avalanche that buried a resident shoveling her walk in eastern Washington.  The importance of quality avalanche forecasting and education has never been greater.  We hope you will stay tuned and offer whatever support you can.

NWAC Funding

Rad dude
The Friends have been working hard to ensure that NWAC can operate through the entire season, and we are happy to report that thanks to the support of the Washington State legislature, NWAC is fully funded this winter.  However, the future beyond 2009 is very uncertain.  As you may have heard in the news, the State budget is receiving major cuts, and the likelihood of another infusion in 2010 is slim.  Without the State's extra assistance, NWAC may be facing a shortfall of as much as $150,000 in 2010.

We have been working with Washington State Parks for two years now on a thorough analysis of NWAC and a solution to the ongoing funding dilemma.  The final report was submitted to the legislature last month.  As expected, the report calls for a much bigger contribution from the private sector.  The Friends is committed to meeting this challenge, but we will need your support more than ever.  We will keep you updated as our plan to address the shortfall is developed.

Know the Snow Initiative

BoarderFOAC is collaborating with the Alpine Safety Awareness Program to develop the Know the Snow Avalanche Awareness Initiative.  The Initiative offers free avalanche awareness classes to individuals and groups that recreate in the mountains in winter.  Participants include skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers and snowshoers.

Education is the key to avoiding avalanche hazards.  Know the Snow classes are introductory, multi-media 2-hour awareness sessions that provide a basis for further education.

In an effort to meet the demand for classes, we are also working to develop a pool of instructors with experience traveling in avalanche terrain.  If you are interested in being trained as an instructor, or would like to attend a class, please contact us at info@avalanchenw.org.
