If you own a 1996 to 2004 W+D 627     your display is nearing the end of its lifespan if you haven't already upgraded to a new VersaView

v1

For most of you, your 627 machines are the real money makers in your envelope operation. As you know  computer based electronics are rapidly changing and improving. However, the fact is that these sophisticated electronics that control your machines have a limited lifespan.  We are now seeing a higher rate of failure with the older  display designs as their productive lifespan comes to a close. For the older W+D system (1996 to 2004) PC's brands like Innoscan, B&R or Beckhoff have been used.  Production of these models by the vendors has stopped and repair parts are very difficult, if not, impossible to find. The visualization software is Windows98 based and also no longer supported by Microsoft. Since 2004 W+D has been delivering machines with the new visualization software and no upgrade is required on these newer machines.

Why you need to upgrade now - Shawn's views
Shawn Dade
I have handled numerous display upgrades, some on a planned basis and other as a breakdown situation. First let me say that from my experience it's not if  your display is going to fail it's when is it going to happen if you havent already upgraded.  It's a fact of life for all electronics of that era.  The exchange as a preventative maintenance approach

is approximatley 20% less expensive in terms of the hardware costs then when done on a emergency breakdown situation. Add to this the machine downtime and  rushed environments that this problem creates and I can say that waiting untill it happens is not the ideal way to handle it. The average time you can expect to be down without full operational capabilities is  7-10 days in an emergency situation . In thisa time period we can get you back up and remotely doing size changes,  but your operators will be working blind with no display of machine faults until a repaired sytem is in place and there is a charge for the remote size change input support from W+D.

Besides the price, loss of use and hassle factors there are also some very big technical improvements to the new interface upgrade that I personally feel are very significant.

Here are my top 8 improvements in the upgraded technology:

1 - New flash drive replaces  traditional  hard drive. In the 5 years since new systems were introduced W+D has had no failures!
2 - Much improved graphical screen interface that is easier for the adjustor to understand
3 - Shorter boot-up time (approx. 2 min. now) vs. 20 min.
4 - Improved telecommunications and data transfer capabilities for remote diagnostics and  emergency remote support from W+D
5 - No need to plug in for remote maintenance
6 - Simultaneous access to the drive and PLC screen interface during maintenance mode makes full machine diagnostics faster and easier
7 - Faster download conversion in case  PLC failure
8 - Easier self installation for your maintenance staff in case of emergency breakdown will get you back up running faster
