Entrepreneurial Endeavors

Dear Greetings!,

Who said summer is slow at EIU? Believe me, that is not the case in our office. We've freshened up our look and are focusing more than ever on growing, encouraging and connecting entrepreneurs. Click here to see the new BSC brochure. Hats off to Jeff Calaway, EIU writing intern, for his wonderful work refreshing our publications this summer. Also a big thank you to EIU student intern, Ajie Attawia and Lake Land College GIS intern Josh Perkins for some stellar work with the the web-site, iEntrepreneur Challenge materials and geographic maps our clients can use for market research.

This month we're preparing for the Coles County Entrepreneurship Class, adding Geographic Information Systems maps to our toolbox of business resources, highlighting businesses that have used our free and confidential coaching services, sharing Camp e3 moments, and announcing 180 job openings in Paris. Happy reading and thanks for your support!

In service to our communities,
Jeanne C. Dau

CW MOTORSPORTS OPENS IN EFFINGHAM

CW Motorsports

Cody Willenborg has opened CW Motorsports at 711 W. Jefferson in Effingham. Cody admits he knows more about bikes than business, so he came to the Business Solutions Center's Counselor, Stan Thurman, to see if he could turn his passion into profit as a full-time venture. Says Cody, "Stan helped me put the numbers together to see if I could make a living out of this business. Based on these projections and client demand, he encouraged me to start my own place."

IKE'S BAR IS PURCHASED BY EIU GRAD

Ikes

Recent EIU graduate Andrew Phipps is the new owner of Ike's, located at 459 Lincoln Ave. in Charleston.  Before making the purchase, Andrew and his father Kris consulted with the Business Solutions Center's Business Coach, Tiffany Kline and Director, Jeanne Dau. Andrew states the coaching with the Business Solutions Center gave him a better idea of what questions to ask before, during, and after the purchase process; even general knowledge that he may not have thought of at the time.

He also states "If you see an opportunity that is worth taking, find out what you need to accomplish it, see if it is within your reach, and then use the resources around you to make it happen." After managing the bar for close to a year he is now enjoying the experience of owning it.  Andrew is keeping extremely busy with renovations which he hopes to have completed by the end of July.

Josh GIS Intern
Josh Perkins, Lake Land College Intern, has spent his summer mapping the 8,000 businesses in the eight counties that the Business Solutions Center serves using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. These maps can be used as a resource for BSC clients and help answer questions such as:  where is the best location for a business?, where are my customers located?, where should I open a branch office? For more information, please contact Tiffany Kline at tlkline@eiu.edu or 217-549-8416.

180 JOB OPENINGS IN PARIS

The Paris market currently has approximately 180 openings and the community is going all out to help the employers. The Paris Economic Development Corporation-PEDCO-is reaching out to local high schools in the area and arranging tours of manufacturing facilities that are hungry for prospective employees.  The students toured Cargill, North American Lighting and Simonton Windows. After the tour the HR departments met with the students and explained what their company does, what employers are looking for and what they have to offer. A job fair was also held at Paris High School in the spring. Check out the web-site created by Pedco at http://parisillinoisjobs.com/ to link prospective employees with job opportunities.

BSC COACH'S CORNER

BSC Coach

One of my favorite websites for information and resources is www.entrepreneurship.org. This site was created by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Entrepreneurship.org is a as a free, online resource designed to help build entrepreneurial economies. It provides up-to-date news, a resource center, and many helpful informational articles that provide an aspiring entrepreneur with many of the tools and information they will need to go forward with their dream.

Another helpful website is www.entrepreneur.com. This is the official website of the monthly Entrepreneur Magazine. Some segments of the website require a subscription but many of their articles and guides can be accessed for free.
