Entrepreneurial Endeavors |
Greetings!
A recent study of 25,000 middle-to-high-school-age youth by the Center for Rural Entrepreneurship at the Rural Policy Research Institute (RUPRI) reported that:
- 51% of youth picture themselves staying or returning home in the future if there are opportunities to do so.
- Almost half of rural youth are not interested in traditional careers; they want to own their own businesses.

What can you do to help spur young entrepreneurs in our area? We have plenty of ideas. Read below about:
- hosting BSC's "Do You Have What it Takes to Be an Entrepreneur?" program in your classroom this month.
- attending the CEO Trade Show at the EPC on Monday, May 7th at 5 pm to support the Effingham County teens promote their businesses.
- sending a teen age 14-18 to the Midland States Bank sponsored BSC Camp e3 on June 17-20, 2012
- attending or publicizing the "How to Start a Business" workshop in Pana or Paris in April.
- cheerlead and champion entrepreneurial success stories such as David Orr of Fruper.com.
Stay tuned - we will be announcing our new counselor next week.

David Orr Named Univ. of Arizona Entrepreneur of the Year and Meets with Warren Buffet
| David Orr with Warren Buffet earlier this year in Omaha. |
David Orr, Camp e3 speaker, graduate of St. Anthony's High School in Effingham, Illinois and owner of Fruper.com was recently named the "#1 Entrepreneur at University of Arizona" by ZonaHomePage.com! Check out the interview here: http://www.zonahomepage.com/
David was also selected as one of twenty students from the University of Arizona Eller College of Management to fly to Omaha Nebraska to meet Mr. Warren Buffett. "The experience was truly life changing," says David. "I was most amazed at how humble Mr. Buffett was. He drove himself around in a KIA, traveled with no security, and did not like formal introductions. I actually took a notebook full of suggestions and quotes from the various speeches Mr. Buffett gave my group. I've listed some of my favorite quotes below:
Wide diversification is only required when investors do not understand what they are doing.
It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently.
It's far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price.
David has graciously accepted our invitation to be the kick-off speaker at Camp e3 on Sunday, June, 17th at Eastern Illinois University. All are invited to hear more about his entrepreneurial journey! |
