Entrepreneurial Endeavors |
Greetings!
Politics aside, I enjoyed some of the quotes that came out of the State of the Union address: "We do big things" and "We need to out-innovate, out-educate and out-build the rest of the world." I think my absolute favorite was "This is our generation's 'Sputnik' moment," because it brought back flashbacks of my early childhood, living in an air force base town, and knowing all too well the importance of winning the space race with the Russians. President Obama continued by saying, "The science wasn't even there yet. NASA didn't exist. But after investing in better research and education, we didn't just surpass the Soviets, we unleashed a wave of innovation that created new industries and millions of new jobs."
Many new products were created from NASA's inventions for the U.S. Space Program. Here is a quick list from the NASA website: kidney dialysis machines, computer-aided tomography (CAT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), freeze-dried food, cordless power tools & appliances, disposable diapers, rotary blood pump, fiber optics, satellite dish, bar codes, ear thermometer, fire-resistant fabrics, smoke detector, thermal gloves and boots. What a list! Sorry, no Tang - that was invented by a scientist at the General Foods Corporation. It was a product that actually had dismal sales until the astronauts took it into space and the rest is history.
Now is the time to think big and unleash a wave of innovation. Sign up for a workshop that shows you how to commercialize a technology or how to start a business. Check out our social networking classes or grab the notes from our last Consultant Connection LinkedIN program to better reach your customers. Call us to receive free and confidential counseling from BSC and SCORE. We're here to help.
Sincerely,
Jeanne
