Starring Jessalyn Gilsig, Bailee Madison, and Ty Olsson, Smart Cookies tells the story of Julie Sterling, a hard-charging real estate agent who finds herself leading a troop of Girl Scouts at the height of cookie season. She channels her energies into the cookie campaign and along the way discovers the meaning of true love and friendship. Watch a preview here!
Fall 2012 Pathways Guide is here!
Pathways Guide GSSWT's Pathways Guide is published twice a year (January and August). Hard copies of the publication are available for every registered Girl Scout and the guide can be easily accessed online.

Inside the Pathways Guide, you'll find a step-by-step guide to registering for and attending a variety of council-sponsored activities that emphasize the flexible pathways in Girl Scouts. GSSWT staff plan and implement girl activities and adult learning opportunities throughout the council's 21-county service area to meet the needs and interests of our diverse membership. Each event identifies the appropriate grade level, if adults are required to attend, and if the event is for troop, individual or family participation.

Get Your Starter Kit!

Starter Kit If you're a Girl Scout parent or volunteer, our Starter Kits make it easy to use a leadership journey and The Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting together, as part of one great experience for girls.

Each Starter Kit includes The Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting, insignia and an American flag patch. Based on her interests, each girl can also choose a leadership journey. She can choose a sash or vest, and has the option to add her council ID and troop number. Starter Kits even come with a free Girl Scout drawstring bag -- a $12 value (while supplies last)!

Adult Recognitions Update

In an ever-changing volunteer culture, Girl Scouts has to come up with new ways to recognize volunteers. GSUSA has decided to retire the Outstanding Leader, Outstanding Volunteer, and Adult Development Pin and the leaves associated with it. Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas will honor applications for these awards until the supply in the Girl Scout Shop is depleted.

When awards are taken away, new ones are made. GSUSA has created the Volunteer of Excellence award that recognizes volunteers from any pathway. An example of someone deserving this award might look something like this:

A volunteer Program Advisor works over the course of the year with a teen advisory committee of 30 current Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors who plan and deliver four performance day camps, using content from the aMuse Journey, targeted to girls in underserved areas of the council. As a result, those areas have a combined total of 210 new Junior girl members and 16 new adult volunteers; 92 percent of the girls at camp also signed up for other opportunities during the year.

For more information on this process, please contact the Volunteer Development Center (210-349-2404/1-800-580-7247 ext. 207).

Explore Volunteering Opportunities

As a society, we lose something
every time a girl doesn't raise her hand in school, doesn't say what's on her mind, or chooses not to lead. But with you in her life, she's one step closer to speaking out and leading the way.

Your time as a mentor will give a girl the environment she needs to blossom into her best self, regardless of how she defines it: scientist, business leader, stay-at-home mom, race-car driver or mayor of your town. You don't need experience working with girls to be good at this. You just need to believe in the potential of girls and be there to support them.

So what are you waiting for? We hope you'll explore volunteering opportunities with Girl Scouts, the world's premiere girl-leadership organization. But if that's not for you, check out opportunities with Big Sisters, Girls Inc. and other girl-serving organizations. Because if it's good for girls, it's good for us.

Wurzbach Parkway progress

Keep an eye out for heavy equipment transportation in our area as construction on the Wurzbach Parkway extension continues to progress.

Please drive slowly when entering the grounds near the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center, as trucks will be coming and going quite often through the lot.

Girl Scouts Do Great Things!

Eagle Pass Girl Scouts Girl Scout Brownie Hanna Hardt, from Eagle Pass, rallied her Girl Scout sisters to clean up Maverick County Lake. Earlier in the summer, Hanna and her mother took a stroll around the lake when she noticed two ducks had died due to the pollution in and around the water. On August 2, multi-level Girl Scout Troop 1086 took action and collected several bags of trash from a small section of the lake. Their work will improve the habitat of all wildlife at Maverick County Lake.

Girl Scouts Adalina H., Amanda L., Andrea H., Alayna G., Adriana H. and Hanna want to inspire others to help those who cannot help themselves. These fabulous young Girl Scouts also want to remind you to "reduce, reuse and recycle and always leave a place cleaner than you found it!"

Thank you, Eagle Pass Girl Scouts, for your dedication to your community and its wonderful wildlife.
