U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison receives Pathfinder Award On May 1, The Greater Chamber presented Girl Scout Alumna and U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison with the Pathfinder Award, The Chamber's highest honor. The award is given to a pioneer, a leader who has forged new and innovative courses for the benefit of those who follow. Senator Hutchison has been a Pathfinder throughout her career in public service. Senator Hutchison has had many "firsts" in her life, to include, the first onscreen female reporter in Texas, working as Legal and Political Correspondent for KPRC-TV in Houston until 1971; first female member of the Texas House of Representatives from a district in Houston until 1976; and first woman elected to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate.
Kristine Nelson Howland named Trinity Director of Planned Giving
Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas volunteer Kristine Nelson Howland, a proven fundraiser with more than 20 years of experience in public and private sectors of higher education and related fields, has been named director of Planned Giving at Trinity University. Congratulations!
Christie Goodman received Del Oro award
GSSWT volunteer Christie Goodman received the Tex Taylor Lifetime Achievement Award from the San Antonio Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America at the Del Oro Awards banquet. Christie is the troop leader for both of her daughter's troops. Congrats, Christie!
Troop 177 Helps Guide Dogs of Texas for Bronze Award Project
For their Bronze Award project, members of Girl Scout Junior Troop 177 built two custom benches from scratch so that visually-impaired clients who use the bus would have a place to sit protected from the sun and rain at the Guide Dogs of Texas location. The girls made sure that the dedication plaques on the benches include Braille. The troop also held a collection drive and a dog wash event, where they washed 23 dogs and were featured on KENS-TV News. With the support they received, they were able to donate supplies Guide Dogs of Texas needed for two new litters of puppies.
Jessica Kowalski receives NEISD's Student Volunteer of the Year
Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas would like to recognize Jessica Kowalski as the Johnson High School Principal's Award recipient for the fourth year in a row and the prestigious NEISD Student Volunteer of the Year. Jessica has been a Girl Scout since 2nd grade and is currently a member of Troop 32 in the Tejeda Service Unit. As a Girl Scout, Jessica has earned her Bronze and Silver awards and is currently completing her God and Life Award. Jessica is an active Youth Leader for the Community Bible Church in San Antonio and is involved in speech, drama, and debate, finishing as both a State and National finalist. Jessica will be heading to Dallas Baptist University to study Children and Youth Ministries on a full ride scholarship this fall. She will also graduate Summa Cum Laude! Congratulations, Jessica (and her parents, Greg and Jennifer Kowalski)! And thank your for your 1,000+ hours of community service!

Parkway progress and construction updates |
|
Construction on the Wurzbach Parkway extension continues to progress, affecting traffic flow to and from the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center.
West Ave at Wurzbach Parkway
Non-stop closure through October
West Avenue, between Walker Ranch Park and Indian Hollow Apartments, will be closed for approximately six months while crews rebuild West Avenue. This will be a complete closure and no traffic will be allowed through the construction zone. North-bound traffic will be routed to Nokoma to U.S. 281 frontage roads to Bitters and onto West Avenue. South-bound traffic will turn left on Interpark, right onto the U.S. 281 frontage road and right on Nokoma, then reach West Avenue.
Starcrest Rd from Budding Blvd to Wetmore Ave
Non-stop closure through August
The east-bound lanes of Starcrest are closed for work relative to the Wurzbach Parkway project. All traffic has been diverted to the west-bound lanes, limiting Starcrest to a single lane in each direction. No left turns are permitted along this road. This closure has been extended.
