GSSWT Will be Forever Thankful to
Zudora B. McCoy

Girl Scout alumna and former Girl Scout staff member, Zudora Whitlow McCoy passed away at the age of 91 on Sunday, August 8, 2010. She was affectionately called "Chief" at Girl Scout camp, was a Girl Scout employee for 34 years (1948-1982), and was forever an advocate on behalf of all girls.

Zudora was a pioneer and made history working with the Girl Scout President, Mrs. Martha Camp and local supporters to purchase Camp Mira Sol as a campsite for African American Girl Scouts in 1949. It became the first integrated camp for Girl Scouts in the Southwest. Zudora was also responsible for developing volunteer and service team training with a focus on how to involve all girls in Girl Scouting.

In 1998, the new Mira Sol dining hall and lodge was dedicated and named in Zudora's honor, as the founder and first director of Camp Mira Sol. In the fall of 2009, special tribute was paid to her at the Girl Scout African American Women's Leadership Summit by Past Board President, Gertrude Batiste, who presented Zudora's Girl Scout photo album to the Girl Scout History Committee on her behalf. Chair Elect, Jackie Gorman-Johnson, gave special recognition to Zudora for her vision in the Girl Scout Movement.

Thousands of Girl Scouts have enjoyed beautiful Camp Mira Sol for more than 60 years, thanks to the fortitude, commitment, and determination of a great leader who will always be remembered as "Chief." This historic Girl Scout information is now stored with special care at the Institute of Texan Cultures.

The Girl Scout flag at the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center will be flown at half staff from Friday, August 13 through Monday, August 16 in Zudora's memory.

Zudora's family has invited all Girl Scouts to attend funeral services at 11 a.m., Monday, August 16, 2010 at Second Baptist Church, 3310 E Commerce St., San Antonio, 78220. Burial services will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Zudora B. McCoy to Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas. Please contact Carole Wood, Donor Relations Manager (210-349-2404/1-800-580-7247/ cwood@girlscouts-swtx.org).
