Holiday tips for harried communicators

Dear friends,

Shopping, parties and spending quality time with family, friends and colleagues define the holidays for many of us. But there is still work to do and we must continue to remain productive. Below are some tips that we hope will help you enjoy the holidays more--and still get your job done.
  • Social media allows us to reach so many all at once...don't overlook the opportunity to share your news broadly through Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.
  • You are busier than usual. Maybe multitasking more than usual. Please--spell check.
  • Information may be power, but alcohol erodes that power. Remember to keep confidential information confidential, even when you're belly up to the bar with your favorite journalist.
  • You can save time shopping by taking a stroll around the office. All those stress balls, coffee mugs, business card cases and stuffed animals with company logos from that last trade show will get you one stocking stuffer closer to your goal.
  • Regifting is OK. Resist the urge to open that box of chocolates and give them to your kid's school bus driver.
  • The holiday news cycle needs YOU! Brainstorm a timely story or break a story that otherwise might not get ink. While it might not be as widely read as it would be after the holidays, it will still support your search engine optimization.
  • Make a charitable donation in your client's name in lieu of a traditional gift. It will benefit a good cause and save you time on your holiday gift shopping!
  • Take your holiday card on line. It's more efficient, less expensive and greener. Use the money you save to make that charitable donation.
  • Celebrate your holiday event after the New Year. Venues are looking for business in the doldrums of winter, so it's less expensive. An added benefit is that your guests won't have to fit in yet another holiday party into their busy December schedules.
We wish you all a happy, healthy and safe holiday season!

Keeping Tabs:
Sorting through the media madness

Kathy Kiely, President of The Ad Club wrote recently about how keeping tabs on developing trends in the media can be intimidating, even for the most experienced marketing communications professionals.

Kathy had the opportunity to chat with a group of "ninjas" - a special team crafted to help sort through the madness. The 15-member team represented different backgrounds such as traditional media buying and planning, analytics and search and digital strategy. In the spirit of the team's mission, here are a few trends to watch...

Web and TV convergence: The ninjas pointed out the fact that people continue to watch more and more TV on the Internet. Channels such as Bravo are riding the wave on Twitter to maximize spot behavior. On the flip side, there are services offering TV and movies such as Apple TV and Hulu.

Cars going mobile: Apps are being produced for your car's dashboard. For example, Ford is bringing Pandora and Twitter to the 2011 Fiesta. To use this technology effectively from an advertising perspective, one really has to examine people's "car" behavior to capture what is desirable in a dashboard app and what could be considered annoying or distracting.

Augment your reality: Imagine walking into an enormous mall, and you just can't find that store map fast enough. Whip out your Smartphone and, most likely, there is an augmented reality app waiting to help guide you. Through your phone's camera, GPS data, and compass, these apps can allow users to find the nearest coffee shop, play with virtual toys, and point out constellations in the sky.

In Boston, we're fortunate to live in a city full of geniuses. They create and they are close enough to explain. The The Ad Club does its best to take advantage of this through holding events such as the EDGE Conference, CMO Breakfast Series and Media Innovation Day.

If you don't yet have a team of ninjas at your disposable, events like these might be worth checking out to keep up.
Event Trends:
Teambuilding for the holidays

Are you looking for a unique way to engage, inspire and motivate your employees? Castle has seen a new trend toward office-based, local teambuilding activities. Many of our clients have turned to us recently for ideas to help boost internal ties and bonds.

In lieu of hosting a traditional cocktail party during the holidays, why not consider a teambuilding activity or event? Below are a few ways to motivate and inspire--and reconnect--this holiday season (or any season for that matter).

Here's a thought...

  • Clue-based challenges promote team-based strategy: How about an "amazing" race or a scavenger hunt through your town or office? You'd be amazed at how competitive teams get and how much good natured teasing and bonding results.
  • Dare we say, arts and crafts are just plain fun, especially when those who aren't so crafty are "encouraged" to join in. Conduct a miniature golf hole-making competition at your office, then all play a round on your custom-designed course - complete with 19th hole, of course.
  • Cooking challenges are hot! Yes, we did say, "hot!" Consider a chili cook-off, an iron chef contest or a grilled cheese competition. Or, for something simpler to pull off, how about a gingerbread-men decorating competition with make-your-own hot cocoa and s'mores stations.

One of the ways we foster creativity--a core mission at Castle--and boost internal bonding is through our annual "Thing" competition. Each December, we hand out a set of raw materials (a different theme each year) to all of our employees. They are given a week or so to create some-"Thing" unique from the supplied items and then present it at our annual holiday get-together.

Year after year, we are consistently reminded how creative our entire team is, not just by the "Things" they create but by the presentations themselves. For us, this is the best gift of all!
