Consider...

Dear Friends,

We may be in a recession, but this economic downturn also means great savings for your meetings and events. The importance of face-to-face meetings is undeniable; coupled with the valuable savings now available makes this a time to make the most of your meeting dollars.

Great deals are everywhere. Hotels and convention centers are more willing to negotiate than ever before. Not only are group room rates lower, but in addition, we've been able to secure items for our clients such as free internet usage, deep discounts on food/beverage and audio-visual services, waived resort fees, rebates and greatly reduced attrition and cancellation fees.

President Obama also recognizes the value of meetings. The 44th president recently backed a promotion where, in Washington D.C., planners receive incentives such as 44 percent off convention center rental fees, a 44-minute reception with 44-cent beer and wine, 44 meal options priced at $44 each, 44 free tabletop exhibits and a free drawing at 4:44 p.m. each day of the conference, among other concessions.

This year, consider hosting your annual meeting or event at a previously untouchable five-star resort at three-star prices. Bottom line: it's time to make a deal.

In related travel industry news, the U.S. Travel Association is lobbying hard to pass the Travel Promotion Act. If passed, a new board would govern destination marketing efforts aimed at increasing international visitation to the U.S.

Finally, Keep America Meeting is an organization working with both the public and private sectors to promote the value of meetings. Follow them on Twitter or explore all their materials and efforts here. There are tools to help spread the word about the value of meetings, a petition to encourage legislators to publicly support meetings and events, and more.

And, as always, let us know how we can enhance your meetings, events, conferences and incentive programs.
Best,

And now a word from SVP and social media whiz Mark O'Toole on our support for client and partner company, TravMedia, a media company that provides tools and services for travel companies and travel journalists:

With TravMedia's limited marketing budget and a need to reach media and PR pros in the travel industry to encourage subscriptions to client and partner organization TravMedia, we turned to Twitter as a marketing tool.

The appeal of a low barrier to participation made Twitter an appealing, if experimental, marketing platform.

We started by following key industry influencers and those we wanted as subscribers: tourism boards, travel media and other Twitter travel big shots. The inclination of people to "follow back" helped build an initial solid base of followers to the feed.

For content, we started by merely posting headlines of client news posted on TravMedia. Next, we began to add in links from other travel news sources that announced industry jobs, events and initiatives. And of course, we used the valuable "re-Tweet" to share interesting news posted by TravMedia followers.

In about 30 days, the feed had caught on. We quickly attracted several hundred followers. From there, it was viral social media at its best. Soon, others were recommending following @TravMediaUSA through the "#FollowFriday" feature, and people were regularly re-Tweeting our posts.

Since mid-December when we launched the feed, we've grown to 3,200 followers today, with new followers each day.

Can we call this a success? Absolutely. The rapid growth in followers aside, we've seen about a 150 percent increase in trials on the TravMedia service this year, and the company has doubled its projected budget through May. Beyond that, we are regularly engaged through the DM (direct message) tool on Twitter and regularly asked for information and opinion. The posts are widely read and shared, and the follower growth pace has increased, not decreased. Twellow, the so-called "Yellow Pages" of Twitter, lists @TravMediaUSA among the top 400 travel feeds in the world (out of nearly 20,000). Twinfluence, which analyzes Twitter reach, ranks TravMedia among the top 15,000 of all worldwide Twitter feeds (among 10 million or so), reaching more than five million people.

Finally, we hosted our first "Tweetup" in New York City in May, and since this was our first time promoting an event via Twitter, our expectations for attendance were modest. However, we were pleased to see an impressive turnout of about quadruple the anticipated number of participants. The "Tweetup" started as an interesting experiment and showed a level of engagement among followers that pleasantly surprised us.

Words to live by? "Fortune favors the bold. See it, want it, work for it."
Pet peeve? "When people chew with their mouths open."
On the weekends, you can be found where? "Pretty boring. Most likely catching up on things: laundry, roaming the isles at Target, etc. On a good day, I'll be in a coffee shop reading. Or in the park reading with a coffee. Or at the public library...with coffee."
Favorite YouTube video? " I love the Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake SNL clips."
Oddest job? "I ran a robotic welder for Honda after graduating high school. It was grueling: summertime, no AC, hard hat and steel-toed boots. Reinforced my belief that going to college was important!"
Boston Red Sox vs. Cincinnati Reds? "I know I'm going to get killed for this, but I have to go with the Reds. If you had asked 'Celtics vs. Cavaliers,' I would've gone with the Celtics. It's just so hard to get Sox tickets and Cincinnati's stadium is renovated and much more comfortable." *
Top three artists on your iPod right now? "Mat Kearney, MGMT and Kanye."
Fun fact? "I know how to drive tractors."

* Note: Most people appreciate Fenway Park's history. We believe it's often referred to as "America's Most Beloved Ballpark."

Castle also created a Facebook quiz to build buzz leading up to the event. Sandy Lish's children and their friends even got into the act by participating in a banana split-making contest on the FOX 25 Morning Show (pictured).

The weather didn't cooperate during the March of Dimes Walk for Babies last month, but a little rain didn't keep us from reaching and exceeding our fundraising goal for this important cause. Thanks to those that supported Castle's team.
