Greetings,
Well, today is officially the last day of summer, and what a beautiful summer we have had. Everyone here has been talking about what a great time of year it is to ride. Yesterday, a customer who was dropping his bike off for service commented on how much his bike loved the fall. If you ride, I bet you know what he means.
As you may know, we embrace safety gear here at Great Bay Motorcycles. We all wear it and some of us can truly attest to its functionality, and some of us might only be able to because we were wearing helmets.
Two summers ago my son was in a crosswalk near our home and was struck by a car involved in a multi-car accident. He stepped right in front of the car as the pileup occurred. It was somewhat of a miracle, he was banged up, but fine. The car that struck him had a mashed grill and a big dent on the hood where his little head hit. Why was he home from the hospital that same night besides plain old good luck? Because his neurotic dad knew that as soon as he crossed the street he was going to jump his skateboard, so it was simply easier to demand that he put the helmet on before he entered the crosswalk and crossed the street. He complied and we will never know what may have happened if he had not had his helmet on. Today, that helmet is scarred up and has racked up a couple of other great saves. In our household, skateboarding and bicycling equal wearing your helmet, period.
Okay, why am I on this soap box? Check out the photo of a customer's Arai helmet. It doesn't look bad, it just a nice sized gouge on the forehead area. But, are you ready for this? This rider wasn't even moving. He was stopped at an intersection and the car behind him rear ended him. His Ducati was totaled, he flipped over in the air and landed on his head. He took the ambulance ride and was released from the hospital sore, but intact. Now imagine if he hadn't had that helmet on. Flipping up in the air and landing on the pavement could be the veritable show stopper.

 The lesson here is: wearing a helmet can lessen head injuries. If you don't wear a helmet and don't want to, that is absolutely fine and absolutely your right. But if you do wear one, think of it as your single most important piece of equipment. Make riding your motorcycle or scooter equal wearing your helmet, period.Is your helmet over five years old? So jump on your motorcycle or scooter or jump in your car and enjoy some fun outside this Sunday. It will be a great way to kick off the fall riding season.
