Knowing Pains Receives Glowing Reviews!
Knowing Pains: Women on Love, Sex and Work in our 40s
September 29, 2008
Viral Marketing Really Does Work!

Within 48 hours of releasing our launch email, we rocketed to #1 in Amazon's breast cancer category!  The bookstore where we had our first reading sold out Friday evening with standing room only.  Most importantly, we have received glowing reviews from women who have been inspired and touched by stories in the book (see Molly's Notes below).

Women in Seattle, Houston and Iowa have contacted us, asking how they can help set up readings and discussion groups in their areas.

This is the support we need to reach our goal of raising $50,000 in the first year for Breast Cancer Action and selling 13,000 books!  At the same time, we are starting to touch women's lives and give them a starting point for discussion and connection with mothers, sisters, friends and colleagues.

Please consider going to the Amazon or Barnes and Noble site to write a review of the book.  Our press release went out September 22nd, and was picked up by news outlets around the country.  Our first newspaper article will be in the Oakland Tribune this week.  IfShoes from Launch Party you have ideas for contacts, outlets or publicity opportunities, please contact Molly Rosen at mollyr@KnowingPains.com.

Books are available for purchase where readings are held, and at Amazon.com.  Check out our Knowing Pains website for more details!

A Message from the Executive Director of Breast Cancer Action, Barbara Brenner

"Breast Cancer Action is thrilled with the launch of the Knowing Pains anthology and to be chosen as the recipient of proceeds from its sales. These much needed funds will help us be the preeminent breast cancer watchdog, advocating for everyone with and at risk for breast cancer. We are deeply grateful for the hard work and passion of everyone involved in developing this unique and meaningful book."

Our Gift

I wanted to share with you a message I received from Danielle, a reader who owns a retail store and is a single mother:

"I had to write you this morning and tell you how much My Ambassador of Fun affected me last night. I was brought to tears as I was reading the story. My son looked over and asked me what was wrong. Ever since my sister passed away and I began my own business, it has taken away all of my leisure time. I am constantly working and take very little time out for myself. Because of the path I have chosen (did I mention I dream big?) it requires a lot of hard work. Also, the Finding Friendship at Forty story really made me think about how the last five years that I have been on this mission I haven't done my best in staying connected to some of my closest friends. Before I went to sleep I remembered my sister telling me a few days before her death to make sure to stop and smell the roses. As I am walking my son to school today I am going to make sure to do just that. My son and I also made a pinky promise before closing our eyes that he would help remind me throughout the day to pause, relax, and enjoy the moment! Also, at the end of the day we will share all the great stuff that happened!!
Thank you again for sharing your book with me!!"

I was moved to tears myself in reading Danielle's message, and am grateful she shared it with me.  Through the stories in this book, we are giving a gift:
  • A gift to a woman who feels isolated without a community. We have given her ideas on how to develop one.
  • A gift to a woman who feels stranded after a divorce. We have given her a picture of how life goes on.
  • A gift to a woman who feels lost in dealing with the illness or death of her mother. We have shown her that she is not alone.
Thank you in helping us to share this gift.  I promise to continue sharing the stories.

Cafe Cacao!

Many of the writers, members of the editorial review team, designers and supporters celebrated the launch of Knowing Pains at Cafe Cacao and the Scharffen Berger Chocolate Factory on September 20th.  It was an evening of making new friends, sharing inspirational stories, and of course enjoying great food, wine and desserts from Cafe Cacao and our wine sponsors, Mantra Wines and Robledo Wines, both of Sonoma CA.
