Pre-Release Announcement!
Knowing Pains: Women on Love, Sex and Work in our 40s
September 16, 2008
Molly RosenKnowing Pains Is Now Available!

We are releasing an exciting new collection of essays by women who are fabulous and 40-something.  As part of our friends and family network, we knew you'd want to be among the first to know about it.
Sex, marriage, love, divorce, motherhood, singlehood, passion, obsession. Nothing is off-limits to this startlingly fresh group of new female voices.  Knowing Pains: Women on Love, Sex and Work in Our 40s is a new book that brings together a collection of 32 essays from women across the country who form a true picture of how real women not only survive their 40s, but thrive with dignity, courage and laughter.
From tattoos to affairs, from motherhood to mayhem, from battling alcoholism and eating disorders to everything in between, these women aren't afraid to tell it like it is. Conceived and edited by Molly Rosen who sought such an anthology when she turned 40 (and came up empty-handed), Knowing Pains is an honest, humorous, thoughtful and diverse collection of essays by women who are, as the subtitle of the book suggests, "old enough to know better, young enough to do something about it."
We think women of all ages will love Knowing Pains as much as they love Oprah, chocolate, and Spanx®.
100% of all net profits will be donated to Breast Cancer Action ( to support breast cancer education and advocacy.  The book is officially launching in October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Some interesting and alarming statistics among the essayists featured in the book:
  • 89% have been personally impacted by the breast cancer epidemic.
  • 56% have had a family member with the disease.
  • 37% have had breast cancer, or a breast cancer scare.
Books are available for purchase where readings are held, and at  Check out our Knowing Pains website for more details!

Look out for Knowing Pains in a newspaper near you or online around the country.  We're sending out our launch release on PR Newswire on September 22nd through their national wire, and are also being included in a Women's Issues Package, so we'll be looking for great media coverage in the weeks ahead...and lots of book sales and funds for our charity!
The Cause: Battling Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer Action

Through sales of this book, we are helping Breast Cancer Action to carry out their mission.  BCA helps women become effective advocates for their own reproductive health. It works to raise awareness and advance policy changes that will illuminate the underlying causes of breast cancer. BCA achieves its mission through education, direct support, collaboration, community-based organizing, public policy and media advocacy.

How Can You Help?

In less than 18 months we have conceived, developed and produced the first anthology about women in our 40s today. This is truly a project of "Doing good while Doing Well."  We are looking to raise at least $50,000 in this first year of the release.  This means roughly 13,000 books.  Is it possible? Absolutely. Is it possible without a lot of help from all of you to get the word out? Not a chance.

We have taken an unconventional approach to many aspects of this book. Welcoming essays from women of various backgrounds, not just professional writers. Gathering an all-volunteer team of designers, photographers and illustrators. Self-publishing to maximize our margin. And of course, donating all net proceeds to a non-profit.

Now we need your help. We don't have the budget for a spread in the NYT Book Review, and we don't (yet) have Oprah's endorsement on the cover. Instead, we need your help to spread the word to your friends, your family, and contacts in the media. Encourage others to see Knowing Pains as the perfect present for the women in their lives. Let me know if you have suggestions on how you can help. And of course, take the time yourself to find a quiet place, pour a glass of wine and spend some time reading these women's stories yourself. You'll enjoy them. I know I did.
