Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska October 31, 2008
Halloween Logo

Greetings!

We hope you have a fun and safe night out; should be lovely weather for all our Girl Scout Trick-or-Treaters, and their families, across the state.

As we move into fall (and ever closer to the holidays, wow!) we are busy creating your next Program Book, which will include all Spirit of Nebraska programs through May.  We are also putting the final touches on our wonderful outdoor and camp programs for summer 2009. With six camp properties across the state, we know there will be many opportunities for Nebraska (and Iowa) girls to GO PLACES next summer.

It is the anniversary of the birth of our beloved founder, Juliette Gordon Low.  It is amazing what she created back in 1912 and how you keep her vision alive by providing an outlet for girls of all ages to explore the outdoors, themselves and the world around them.  Without you Girl Scouts would not continue to prosper and thrive.  You are living Juliette Low's dream every day through your leadership and dedication to girls and we thank you.

Thinking Day 2009
World Thinking Day is celebrated each year by Girl Scouts and Girl Guides all over the world.  It helps to remind girls that they are all part of a global organization whose mission is to enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world.  Thinking Day also commemorates the joint birthdays of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell who founded the Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting Movement.

This year's theme is "Together We Can Change Our World" which is also the UN Millennium Goal.  Exhibits about different countries will focus on what kinds of food people eat (nutrition), standard of living, a disease (malaria, pneumonia, etc) that is prevalent in that country and steps the country has taken for disease prevention (good hygiene, potable water, vaccines, mosquito netting, etc).   In addition, there will be presentations on asthma, nutrition, fitness and disease prevention relevant to our local community.

Troops, groups and Juliettes (working with other Juliettes) are encouraged to exhibit a country, there will also be a poster competition!  Exhibitors are required to pre-register.  Registration forms are available on our website.

Questions?  Contact Maria Reiter at (402) 871-7099 or [email protected].

Volunteers are needed and can include adults as well as Seniors and Ambassadors looking for leadership opportunities.

artVenture 2009
Who's ready for some artistic fun?  artVenture 2009 is just around the corner and the application process begins November 1.  artVenture is an annual art auction fundraiser for Girl Scouts.  One of the unique features of artVenture is the artist-Girl Scout collaborative workshops.  Talented artists specializing in a variety of mediums (oil painting, printmaking, glass blowing, sculpture and much, much more) work with Girl Scout artists to create beautiful pieces of art for the auction.

Youth artist applications are available beginning November 1 on our website, girlscoutsnebraska.org or by contacting Lori Williamson at 558-8189 ext. 239 or [email protected].  Girls can identify their top three medium choices on the application and we will try to place them in one of their choices.  Completing the application does not guarantee placement in an artVenture collaboration.  Girls will be notified during December about their collaboration matches.

The collaboration workshops will occur during January and February.
All girl artists and their families are invited to our opening night reception and open house on Friday, March 6.  The artVenture auction is adults-only and is on Friday, March 20.

Honor Guard
How would you like to be part of an elite group who get invited to special events like: sports, concerts and ceremonies?  As a member of the Honor Guard you will represent Girl Scouts and participate in flag ceremonies and color guard presentations at a variety of events.
