Dear Friends,
| Summer may be closing, but the best may yet be coming! New England has a reputation for beautiful weather and glorious foliage as the trees change color in the fall. Along with the great weather, Fall is also a time when serious students return to their studies. It is always inspiring to see so many hard - working academics prepare for their future.
Fall is also the season for politics in the United States. It has been four years since President Obama was elected and this November will see another presidential election. The issues regarding the world economy and health care reform are very emotional and this election promises to be a close race ... just as it was four years ago. The conversation classes will undoubtedly be filled with energetic discussions about the political situation.

English & Baseball
|
 | | Baseball Class |
Following last summer's success, this summer we continued with our exciting class, "English & Baseball." This year, the class provided more than 40 students from many different countries the unique opportunity to learn about America's favorite pastime in an entertaining and dynamic environment, all under the watchful eye of a former New York Yankees minor league player.
The program consisted of weekly field experience in a nearby baseball field and combined some in-class lectures with viewings of baseball-themed films to further highlight the game's enduring influence on American culture. In the end, students not only enhanced their knowledge of the game and their skills on the field, but they improved their English as well.
The class culminated in an exciting trip to America's oldest major league stadium, Fenway Park, to see the Boston Red Sox play the Chicago White Sox. The game ended on a exciting walk-off homer from the Red Sox star Cody Rox, making the experience even more memorable for our students.
We here at BSML are excited about our English & Baseball program for the 2013 summer and look forward to sharing it with you.
You can check out some of the program's pictures on Facebook under the English & Baseball Album.
Sincerely,
your Baseball's coach, Agustin.

BSML Student, Rebeca Heredia

When it comes to learning a new language, it's hard to imagine a better way to study abroad than getting involved with its culture. That's why I came to BSML. After a couple of months of being here, I would say that it represents to me a life-changing experience and one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. First of all, I found it really interesting how being immersed in a foreign culture can provide one with the most daily basis for seeing and hearing a new language in the proper cultural context. In fact, I felt that during these months, as I've been exposed to many different life's circumstances, language learning happened most quickly. Although at first, being in an entirely new cultural setting was a little scary for me, it also was exciting! I think it was an opportunity to me to discover new strengths and abilities, and specially conquer new challenges outside my country. I encountered situations that were unfamiliar to me and I learned to adapt and respond to them in the most effective ways I could. Another point I would like to emphasize is that while I was here I had the chance to meet not only native US citizens, but also other international students who were just as far or more from home as myself. Here I was able to see that cultural differences are more than just differences in language, food, appearances, and personal habits. My classmate's culture reflected very deep perceptions, beliefs, and values that obviously influenced their way of life and the way that they view the world. I consider these values to be very important and need to be taken into account. Last but not least, I would like to mention the great educational atmosphere I could feel during my stay in BSML. I have nothing but praise for those teachers that encouraged me with a lot of patience to seek for more knowledge. Every class was a constant challenge and I found myself learning something new every day. I absolutely could not have asked for a better, more eye-opening experience. This summer was an amazing time and I feel as if I have grown a lot as a person and in my language skills. I will miss my host family, friends and teachers. I am so glad about having chosen this school. I hope to come back someday in the future! |
