Dear Friends,
| Now that the holiday season is behind us, we are settling into our winter routine, although this year seems to be anything but routine. The weather in New England has been unusually warm. In spite of that, the skiing outings have been very popular. We have to travel a little further than usual to get some good snow, but it has been well worth it. You can read more about our ski trips later in the newsletter.
We are also experiencing an unusually busy winter season at BSML. The number of students is up significantly from previous years and we are even running our Children's Program, which normally only occurs during the summer. The demand for high quality, English immersion education is up and the United States is becoming an ever more popular destination.
We hope you have noticed our presence on both Twitter and Facebook. Our Tweets focus on providing tips for grammar, vocabulary and structure, as well as news about student activities and achievements. The Facebook page is dedicated to providing a meeting place for current and former students to share news and learn more about what is happening at the school. Winter Children's Program
|
BSML's Children's Summer Program in July and August has been operating successfully for many years. This year, for the first time, we are offering a Winter Children's Program in January and February. Although the weather may be colder, the children still enjoy the same creative learning activities that combine grammar and vocabulary instruction with craft projects and interactive games. Last week, our children proudly displayed their snowmen made of paper plates and cotton balls on the wall outside their classroom. There has been little snow this year, but we hope that, before long, the children will have the opportunity to build a real snowman in front of the school.
On the plus side, mild temperatures made a trip to the Franklin Park Zoo possible this week. The children's program includes a weekly field trip to a place of interest to young people, including the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium.
We look forward to this being the first of many Winter Children's Programs, which offers families the opportunity to live and study together in Boston during a season of great beauty and charm in New England.

Skiing and Snowboarding Trip to Mount Sunapee
|
 | |
BSML Students enjoying a wonderful and sunny day of skiing and snowboarding in New Hampshire
|
Going skiing and snowboarding with 15 young people who have never seen snow before is quite an experience, even for a snow-accustomed European. Our trips usually start with a flurry of activity that involves making sure everyone has warm clothes and the right equipment for a winter outing. The drive up to New Hampshire takes about two hours, which pass by very quickly, especially when the entire bus starts dancing to "Good Feeling" from Flo Rida. Arriving at Mount Sunapee, we first have to learn the very basics of skiing and snowboarding ... Which shoes do we use? Do we need poles? How does one walk in skiing shoes? How do I get into my snowboard's bindings and how do I get out of them without losing my board?
Once we had figured these things out, we started to make our way to the "bunny hill". After overcoming the first challenges, we discovered some real talent among our students. Our young cultural ambassadors, especially those from Brazil and Martinique, turned out to be superstars on skiis! Even though some of us had a lot of black and blue spots after our trips, we had a wonderful time and we really enjoyed having this new learning experience with our new friends from all over the world.

BSML Student, Kyusoo Han from Korea
|
 | Kyusoo Han with his host father, Mark
|
My name is KYUSOO HAN from Seoul in South Korea. First, I appreciate BSML's giving me this opportunity. I still remember the days before I came here. I was wondering which city or school was going to be a good fit me. My first priority was the number of Koreans, studying atmosphere, and the good quality of teachers. Finally, I chose Boston and BSML after careful consideration because every factor which could affect my studying was consistent with my demands. The first impression that I got of BSML was very nice. All the teachers and staff were very kind and they were also willing to help me when I had trouble with something.
BSML has two types of classes. One is the required subjects and the other is the elective classes. The required subjects help me learn a lot of idioms, vocabulary and grammar by using unique textbooks. When it comes to the elective classes, BSML has many varieties of elective classes which are useful for students to correct their weaknesses in their English. Especially, I got a lot of assistance with getting a good score on the TOEFL from the TOEFL Preparation class. Furthermore, I have taken private classes. In these, I can focus more on studying English. It made me more easily take my first step in speaking English. Another thing that I want to talk about is the students. We have many students from different countries. It is beneficial for me to learn about different cultures and how to respect or appreciate differences between different people. These things are not the same as something I can learn from textbooks.
Even though I am tired of eating American food and home-sick, I have such a wonderful host father. He is a hard-working person, a good listener, funny, open-minded, and so on. There are many more words to express his good personality than I can write here. He always encourages me and gives me good advice. If I didn't have this nice host father, I couldn't imagine my life in the U.S.
I love BSML, English, and the U.S so much !!!!
