Dear Friends
| |
This holiday season at BSML seems especially festive. We have been blessed with an unusually large number of students for this time of year and the weather in New England has been spectacular. All in all, we have much to be grateful for and would like to express our very best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a happy, healthy 2012.
At BSML, we are committed to offering the highest quality of education, student services, housing, activities and food services. The results from our most recent student survey show that we are delivering on that pledge. 91% of our students rated their overall satisfaction with the school in the excellent and very good categories, with the vast majority giving us an excellent rating. Similarly, the food service rating was 86% in the excellent to very good categories. In housing, 90% of our students put us in the excellent, very good and good categories, with the vast majority receiving the excellent rating. 88% of the students gave the housing location an excellent rating, demonstrating once again that our location is outstanding. Most importantly, our teachers received an amazing 96% satisfaction rating of excellent and very good. No teacher received a rating below good.
These are extremely rewarding results and we are proud of them. Having said that, everyone here at BSML is committed to continuously striving to improve upon our performance.
We hope you have noticed our presence on both Twitter and Facebook. Our Tweets focus on providing tips for grammar, vocabulary and structure, as well as news about student activities and achievements.
The Facebook page is dedicated to providing a meeting place for current and former students to share news and learn more about what is happening at the school.

BSML Students singing "Deck the Halls" on December's Graduation 2011
|
Every year, at the December graduation, it is our tradition to have a student choral performance under the direction of one of our veteran teachers, George Hungerford. This year's performance was one of the most memorable. George said, "This was one of the most dedicated groups we have had in several years". Indeed, it was an amazing performance. To see a video of the choral performance, please click on this link:
Many thanks to George and to our students for a wonderful concert.

BSML Student, Gustavo Castaņeda from Venezuela
|
 | | Gustavo Castaņeda |
My name is Gustavo and I'm from San Cristobal in Venezuela. The first time I came to the U.S. was in 1988 when I was 9 months old, so I was introduced to the American culture when I was very young. After finishing high school, I first started to study computer science, but after an internship in a U.S. advertising company, I found my real passion in graphic design. When I came back to Venezuela, I told my parents that I wanted to follow in my father's footsteps and study graphic design, which made him very proud. So I began to study in Maracaibo, but kept coming to the U.S. to visit my friends and family.
As English is a global language I decided to go to Boston to improve my English. One of my best friends, Agustin, introduced me to BSML and suggested studying here. The things I like the most about the school is the quality of the classes and the teachers, the individualized schedule, which allows me to focus on my personal goals and the weekly evaluations which give me the opportunity to learn from my mistakes and to see my improvements.
Even though I do miss Arepas, our traditional Venezuelan dish, I am very happy to be here. I am a very curious person so I enjoy the diversity and the cultural differences in the U.S., especially in the school.
And I love Starbucks coffee!

English Tips from Our Teachers

Bob's Grammar Tips
Use "be going to", not "will", to indicate that you feel sure about a future event. Something in the present situation indicates the future event.
Examples: Look at those clouds. It looks as if it's going to rain.
It's almost 9:00. We're going to be late.
Sandra 's Vocabulary Words A fact or event that is noteworthy is interesting, remarkable or significant in some way. Example: It is noteworthy that none of the candidates has experience in foreign policy. Considerable means great in amount or degree.
Example: The hurricane caused considerable damage in the country. Much help will be needed. Ines' Idioms To talk someone into doing something means to persuade someone to do something, to overcome objections to doing something. Example: The salesman talked Tim into buying a very expensive camera. To talk someone out of something means to persuade someone not to do something. Example: Sue wanted to drive to New York during the snowstorm, but her friends talked her out of it.

In conclusion, we would like to leave you with a couple of suggestions for Christmas gifts.
Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect. - Oren Arnold
Best wishes, on behalf of everyone on the BSML Team,
