An Extraordinary Man Returns to BSML
Nathan

Few people we encounter have touched our lives as much as Bill Nathan of Haiti.  A former slave ... yes, SLAVE ... escaped his captors and went about getting an education for himself.  He first came to BSML several years ago as part of his education to improve his English.

Bill returned to his native Haiti to run the St. Joseph's school for boys, an orphanage that specializes in rescuing and caring for former child slaves.  He has dedicated his life to helping desperate and abused orphans find a pathway to education and a new beginning of hope.

It was during the horrific earthquake that struck Haiti that Bill found himself on the roof of his beloved orphanage, when without warning, the 7 story building collapsed, burying him alive under piles of rubble.  Miraculously, he was rescued and airlifted to the United States for treatment of his broken back, ribs and internal injuries.  After medical treatment in Florida and North Carolina, Bill returned to Boston to continue his studies at BSML before returning to Haiti to join the rebuilding efforts.  We were pleased to see that he is fully recovered and returning to his life's work after completing his fourth visit with us.

To learn more about Bill and his amazing story of survival and hope, go to this link to see a news segment that was aired on the ABC National News shortly after the earthquake.

Bob's Grammar Tip

We use "would" to express the future in the past.

Examples:
I knew I would see him again.
He told me he would be in New York on Friday.

Sandra's Vocabulary Words

If you say that something is mind-boggling, you mean that it is mentally or emotionally overwhelming.

Example:

- The amount of damage to the Gulf of Mexico from the oil spill is mind-boggling.

"-minded" can combine with nouns, adjectives and adverbs  to form words which describe a person's character, tells how a person thinks about something, or what he/she cares about.

Examples:

- Tell Mr. Jones your ideas. He is very open-minded.

- People of the same political party are usually like-minded on the issues.
- Mark plans to get an MBA. He is more career-minded than his friends.

Ines' Idioms

To be looking forward to something or to doing something means to be anticipating something with pleasure and excitement

Example:
- I'm looking forward to meeting your family.
- My children are looking forward to their summer vacation.

To look for something means to seek, try to find.

Example:
I can't find my keys. Can you help me look for them?
The police are looking for the escaped convicts.
