An Extraordinary Man Returns to BSML
Few people we encounter have touched our lives as much as Bill Nathan of Haiti. A former slave ... yes, SLAVE ... escaped his captors and went about getting an education for himself. He first came to BSML several years ago as part of his education to improve his English.
Bill returned to his native Haiti to run the St. Joseph's school for boys, an orphanage that specializes in rescuing and caring for former child slaves. He has dedicated his life to helping desperate and abused orphans find a pathway to education and a new beginning of hope.
It was during the horrific earthquake that struck Haiti that Bill found himself on the roof of his beloved orphanage, when without warning, the 7 story building collapsed, burying him alive under piles of rubble. Miraculously, he was rescued and airlifted to the United States for treatment of his broken back, ribs and internal injuries. After medical treatment in Florida and North Carolina, Bill returned to Boston to continue his studies at BSML before returning to Haiti to join the rebuilding efforts. We were pleased to see that he is fully recovered and returning to his life's work after completing his fourth visit with us.
To learn more about Bill and his amazing story of survival and hope, go to this link to see a news segment that was aired on the ABC National News shortly after the earthquake.
