Recent Happenings at BSML
BSML students enjoying a tour of Boston Brewery Despite the winter weather outside, BSML has been organizing some enjoyable off-campus indoor activities for students. In January, a group of ten students and a teacher, Adam Shenker, took a trip to the Museum of Fine Arts. Admission was free and the group had their own tour guide as part of a government grant to introduce English learners to the museum. The following week, several student attended a concert at Boston University to benefit Autism research. The featured performer was AJ Raphael, a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, and a young composer and guitarist with a growing following. In February, Student Services staff member Tracey Hughes arranged for BSML students to attend an ice hockey championship game, the Women's Bean Pot, at Harvard University. Last but not least, our driver, Zlatko Kantardzic, took a van full of students to the Boston Brewery in nearby Jamaica Plain one Friday afternoon. Boston Brewery produces Samuel Adams beer, a very popular local beer. Everyone enjoyed the tour and the opportunity to sample the beer afterwards. As you may know, Boston has strict drinking laws, so only students 21 or older were allowed to try the beer. Along with the rest of the world, BSML students and staff wanted to respond to the tragic earthquake in Haiti. Thanks to their generosity, we were able to send a check to Hearts with Haiti, an organization that supports a home for former street children and another for disabled children in Port-au-Prince. BSML has a special relationship with Hearts with Haiti. If you studied at BSML during the summers of 2007, 2008, or 2009, you will remember our student, Bill Nathan, and his amazing drumming performances. Bill is the director of one of the homes that Hearts with Haiti helps to support. Bill was injured in the earthquake and most of the home was destroyed. Director of Studies, Barbara Goodwin, spoke with Bill recently and he is out of the hospital and recovering well in North Carolina. He is anxious to return to Haiti and even hopes to attend BSML again this summer!

Bob's Grammar Tip
When two sentences express the same
idea, we often combine them by using the appropriate main or auxiliary verb to
shorten the second sentence.
When joining two affirmative
statements, use and + subject + verb + too
Example: I like strong coffee. My
brother likes strong coffee. = I like strong coffee; and my brother does,
too.
When joining two negative statements,
use and + subject + verb in the negative + either
Example: John didn't go to the
party; and Sonia didn't, either.
Sandra's Vocabulary Words
If you heed someone's advise
or warning, it means that you pay attention to it and do what is suggested.
Example: Everyone should heed
the warnings about global warming and work to reduce air pollution.
To insinuate something means
to suggest it indirectly, usually showing disapproval.
Example: What are you insinuating?
That he is lying?
Ines's Idioms
To speak too soon means to say
something prematurely.
Example:
I guess I spoke too
soon about getting promoted to salesmanager. They gave the job to someone else.
To mean to means to intend to
do something.
Examples:
I meant to call
him, but I forgot.
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to
hurt your feelings.
