Issue 73

Greetings!

Have we had enough already? When does having too much gear start to qualify us as "Tactical Gear Hoaders?" And how much of that pile of black and OD really work? And now that it's time to get back on the shooting range, are you shopping at Wally World for your range bag, ammo and accessories? It's time to re-evaluate what we buy and really, really how it performs. I know cost is an issue. You're speaking to a mom to whom every penny counts, but really - enough already. Buying the best you can really afford means that you'll have it at the ready next year, and next year, and next year. Baker Furniture has the ad campaign that exemplifies our "should be" consumerism - "The Art of Things Chosen Well Rather Than Often."

What that means is when you purchase your hearing protection, don't sacrifice your hearing to save a few bucks. You'll be buying new protection next year and you'll be missing half of what they are saying around you  at the Thanksgiving dinner table. Take The SupremePro Ear Muffs from Gaston Glock Style. Not cheap, but then neither is losing all the sounds you've come to enjoy and love like "Shooter Ready!" Buying high quality items used to be something only the very wealthy did. But there are smart shoppers out there that realize buying the best you can afford means you actually save dollars over the long run and enjoy more comfort and performance. Shopping used to be considered an art form (talk to my mom - a skilled shopper, if I ever knew one!) but now it's considered a necessity, or an illness (every watch "Hoarders?"). Maybe when we stop insisting that manufacturers come up with something new on a daily basis, they can take the time to really invest in product development and new technologies that will be better for us overall. Seeing the same product every year with a new color grip or different sights isn't helping our economy or our ability to be leaders of innovation. It's slowing down the process of putting out quality products that really do what they promise. For our industry writers this gives them the ability to write in-depth articles, pushing products to new limits and really testing their abilities to perform  under a variety of conditions. So, when you are thinking about a  purchase, save your money, do  your research and buy the best you can afford, even if that means doing without for awhile. In the long run, you'll have saved money and possibly your hearing, your sight, or even your life.

ArmourLite, the First Shatterproof Watch with Tritium Illumination, to Increase Brand Presence in the Law Enforcement, Tactical, Fire and EMS Markets

ArmourLite watches are unique in that they are the first to recognize the most common fault with all watches and to develop a technology that would render their timepieces literally shatterproof. All ArmourLite watches feature Tritium Illumination, a self-activating light that uses tritium gas in small glass vials, which in turn, are coated with a very thin layer of phosphorescent powder that emits light when energized by the tritium gas. The ArmourLite Tritium watches do not need an outside power source or battery for illumination and will work continuously for over 20 years.

The MasterPiece Arms Protector II Pistol for 2012

MasterPiece Arms continues to evolve the Protector series of concealed carry pistols. Multiple new features enhance the look, feel and performance of these .380 ACP pistols. A beavertail was added to the pistol to eliminate any slide bite and enhance the overall grip-ability of the pistol. New square serrations on the stainless and 4140 black steel slides built from a solid billet, provide a more positive grip, with or without gloves, when racking the slide. Barrel porting significantly reduces the felt recoil by bleeding gas from the barrel when the weapon is fired. Finally, fully machined aluminum grips, hardcoat anodized, are included on the Stainless, Premium and Coyote Brown models.

MGI: One of Most Versatile Weapons on the Planet Made in Old Town

This is an excerpt from an article written by Nick McCrea that appeared in the Bangor Daily News.

Mack Gwinn
Mack Gwinn, president of MGI, holds one of the small arms that his company manufactures at its Old Town facility.

MGI designs and manufactures the Hydra modular weapons system, which has a similar look and feel to the AR-15. But Gwinn's version of the assault rifle allows the operator to change the barrel, magazine well and other parts at will to fire more than 30 different calibers of ammunition.

Doing that sort of alteration on an AR-15 is like changing the engine in a car, Gwinn said. On a Hydra, the switch doesn't require any tools and can be finished in less than two minutes.

The record time for a full caliber switch by an MGI employee is 34 seconds, according to Gwinn.

The Hydra name came from Charlie Cutshaw, a journalist who, because of the gun's ability to fire just about any round, compared the weapon to the mythical many-headed serpent. The nickname stuck.

Tuff Writer® Pen Launched from a Shotgun - Stays in One Piece and Continues to Write

Carteach0 is a blogger who doesn't take challenges lightly. When he heard about Tuff-Writer Inc. setting their sights on proving that the Blendtec Blender, made famous by the "Will It Blend?" series of YouTube videos, would not be able to blend their tactical pen, he wanted to try his own durability tests. So, Tuff-Writer sent him some pen samples and the following video is his demonstration of just how tough these pens really are. Can it survive being shot by a bow into a pile of logs? Yup. How 'bout shot out of a shotgun at the "thin man" next to a hundred year old tree? Of course. The Tuff-Writer pen survived both experiments, stayed in one piece and continued to write every time. Don't believe us? Watch the video yourself for the proof.

REVIEW: TAWATEC E.O.Diver Tactical ICS from The Wrist Watch Review

Today, we're going to have a look at a rather compelling watch that features tritium tubes for illumination.  I've made no secret of being enamored by watches that feature gaseous tritium light sources (aka GLTS), and I think that the model sent for review is a great entry.

If you're not familiar with Tawatec, they've been around since 1993, and are located in Biel, Switzerland.  They focus on producing timepieces that are targeted towards law enforcement, military and firefighting professionals, and the demands that those professions place on watch.  This is even reflected in the company
name, TAtical WAtch TEChnology. What this means for us, the consumer, is that these watches aren't just for show - they should stand up to quite a bit of abuse.
