Cheaper Than Dirt! Discusses Equipment Reliability with BLACKHAWK! |
Excerpt taken from Cheaper Than Dirt! blog, The Shooter's Log.
From humble beginnings crafting durable nylon web gear and packs in a garage back in 1993, BLACKHAWK! has grown into a large corporation offering thousands of products for military, law enforcement, firefighters and EMS, as well as for hunters and self defense. Every product produced by BLACKHAWK! is thoroughly tested under the harshest conditions to ensure that it will hold up and perform when needed the most. In short, for BLACKHAWK! products, failure is not an option. We spoke with Ty Weaver, Senior Manager of BLACKHAWK!'s Special Operations Division to learn more about the history of the company and what goes into the development of their battle-proven equipment.
Ty Weaver BLACKHAWK! was started in 1993 by a gentleman named Mike Noell., He was actually an active duty SEAL at that time. He was in Northern Iraq on patrol hunting SCUD missiles and one of the straps on his backpack failed, which was bad enough on its own, but they had just found out that they were in the middle of minefield when that happened. So, he decided if he ever got out of that, he'd start making gear that the guys could depend on 'cause he wasn't impressed with the quality of the issued gear at that time. He went back, to his East Coast SEAL station in the Norfolk area at Dam Neck. He started designing and building gear out of a 2 car garage in Virginia. He started doing backpacks, load bearing harnesses and things like that.
Cheaper Than Dirt That's still kind of BLACKHAWK!'s bread and butter isn't it?
Ty Weaver Yeah, that's the emphasis. We're a very diverse company now. We were purchased by ATK in April of 2010-and continue to expand our product offerings. ATK has a number of well-known brands under the umbrella-Federal Premium, Speer, CCI, Weaver, Champion, Alliant Powder and RCBS to name a few. It's a great fit.
Cheaper Than Dirt Anytime companies can work together under a single umbrella such as ATK, we see so much more product compatibility and so many more innovative products being developed.

Federal Funding Cut for Meth Lab Clean Ups |
Occasionally when government funding runs out for a program you hear a giant whining from the peanut gallery. But when the dollar pool recently went dry for the funding of cleaning up methamphetamine (meth) labs, you could hear a pin drop. If you are not wearing the blue, you may not even have known such a program existed. But if you are a first responder or law enforcement officer, the lack of funds will mean some hard decisions will have to be made.
So what does this mean to us civilians anyway? Well, here's how it WAS working. When a meth lab was found, local LE contacted their DEA office and the DEA would send out a Hazmat team. The costs run anywhere from $2K to $25K with $8K being a good average. The Hazmat team was then paid through the federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). Without the funding, that $2K to $25K is going to have to come out of the local LE's office.

What does this mean long term? Where are cuts going to be made? How many police and first responders will be performing tasks that used to involve the Tyvek crowd? The concern here is not just the fact that meth labs are environmental disasters, but major health risks for the very people that are first on the scene.
Budget cuts mean less training and less expensive protective gear. Our first responders and police do have one tool that can help them from becoming a statistic in this battle against meth. The Chameleon costs about $50 per officer, per event, to warn him or her of the potential of airborne toxic gases that can lead to illness or even death. Fifty bucks - the cost of a dinner out. Every agency knows the cost of an officer down is more than a hit in the wallet. It's personal. It's family. With meth lab cases on the rise again, it is time to give the individual officer more power. Want more information on how something so simple as the Chameleon can be such a game changer on the drug battlefield? Email LBM. |

A client of Laura Burgess Marketing for six years, Jonathan Blanshay, Chief Executive Officer of Revision, recently sat down with LBM to discuss Revision's past, present and future direction of the company and eyepro as a whole.
The following is an excerpt from the interview. Read the full interview by visiting The LBM Blogger.
LBM: How do you determine what future technologies to invest in research and development?
JB: There are three factors that we consider.
One is customer demand and need. We do a lot of interfacing with the end users, program managers and scientists and technology folks within the various militaries, particularly in the U.S., and try to understand where there are unmet needs.
Secondly, we do internal brainstorm sessions and build on the competencies we've already developed. The more we work in these fields, the more knowledge we get, the more capabilities we develop, the more employees with past experience with certain technologies or materials that we hire...that builds its own momentum.
Finally, just being very aware of what's out there in the market place. We go to a lot of tradeshows; we have a lot of market scans. We try to stay really current with new technologies and we have a lot of companies approaching us. When you're number one in your market segment as we are, someone has a technology that might apply to soldier protection, it is very natural that we would be at the top of the list to partner with.
I think it's a combination of those three things and what I would certainly say about R&D is that it needs to be focused, but it also needs to be very exploratory because things change so quickly. Technologies change and user needs change. You have to be very nimble and react quickly. I think that's something that Revision has always done very well and I certainly think we'll continue to look at the market that way.

Buying a New Folder? Extend its Life with Tuf-Glide |
Sentry Solutions has it right here with their Tuf-Glide. Tuf-Glide contains the same formula as the Tuf-Cloth and Marine Tuf-Cloth products - mineral spirits is the active ingredient and carrier of the proprietary formula. Tuf-Glide should be used in conjunction with Tuf-Cloth, providing your folding knife with corrosion protection inside and out. Also, Tuf-Glide is an excellent lubrication for the pivots of liner lock® and rocker bar back knives. Since it will not wash off with water, it is also long lasting. Tuf-Glide provides the same corrosion protection as Tuf-Cloth, but for hard to reach places like the folder pivot. Available in a ½ ounce bottle, it has a precision needle applicator so that one can put a few drops of Tuf-Glide in the right places with no mess at all. Tuf-Glide is also available in an 8 ounce refill just in case the precision applicator bottle runs out. This is perfect for "recharging" Marine Tuf-Cloth and Tuf-Cloth in the even they should dry out. All you do is open the resealable bag and pour some Tuf-Glide in, saturating the cloth inside. Tuf-Glide is also available in a spray bottle (4 oz and 8 oz) and ¼ oz. pen applicator. Tuf-Glide is also part of the Sentry Solutions Gear Care Kit - Field Grade.

Sixteen Wounded Servicemen Chase Thunder Chickens |
Freedom Hunters had the privilege of partnering with Rob Zepp in hosting 16 wounded service members form up and down the Eastern Seaboard. The 4th Annual Desert Winds Farm Wounded Service Member Spring Turkey Hunt offered wounded servicemen a chance to hunt with local sportsmen. It was the first time hunting turkeys for many of the guys. Windy conditions kept the turkeys fairly quiet, but most of the hunters had opportunities! Retired Marine and "TOP SHOT" contestant Adam Benson drove ten hours just spend a little time with guys. "A Marine on a mission can't be stopped..." Adam demonstrated his shooting abilities which thoroughly entertained the attendees. Following Adam's lead, the servicemen attempted shots made famous from "TOP SHOT". One young Soldier showed Adam that the Army can shoot as well too. Maybe we'll see Sgt Travis on Season #3. The guest of honor at the post hunt luncheon was Mr. F.J.Outland. Mr. Outland is one of last remaining survivors of the USS Indianapolis. At 12:14 a.m. on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea and sank in 12 minutes. Of 1,196 men on board, approximately 300 went down with the ship. The remainder, about 900 men, were left floating in shark-infested waters with no lifeboats. The ship was never missed, and by the time the survivors were spotted by accident four days later only 316 men were still alive. Not a dry eye was found as Rob Zepp told the story of the USS Indianapolis and her crew. We look forward to next years hunt at Desert Winds Farm in Southern Virginia. If you want to help honor our Nation's finest, contact Freedom Hunters.
