Issue 48

Greetings!

November in North Carolina is hard to take. My fleecewear and boots are still in the closet and maybe, just maybe, they'll stay there. There is one pair of boots that will be making it out of the closet, though. I just received my BLACKHAWK! Light Assault boots for SHOT Show (yes, heels only at night now). I couldn't get over how light these are and how comfortable. Like SWAT Slippers. There is no need to have a break-in period either because of the super comfy molded footbed. There is just enough ankle support too without restricting my sprints across the show floor to see our clients. I am really looking forward to feeling great at 5:30 every show day this year, all because of my BLACKHAWK! boots.

As this will be our last newsletter prior to Thanksgiving, we'd like to take a moment to reflect on the past year and give thanks to the support and encouragement we have received from all of you as we continue to grow and transform. May you all have a wonderful Turkey Day.

Sentry Solutions Support War Effort:
A New Hampshire Company Providing the Tools Asked for by Soldiers

With the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division on its way back to Kuwait as the final US combat brigade to leave Iraq after a seven year war, Mark Mrozek, President of New Hampshire based Sentry Solutions, reflected on his company's role during the war and supplying the D.o.D. "We are very proud of all the men and women returning from the war and are humbled by their service and sacrifice. Our thoughts constantly drift to those families who will not see their loved ones again. As a company, we have been directly involved with the military since 1990 and it has always been our mission to make products that help bring more of our soldiers home."

tufclothSentry Solutions, specializes in oil-free, dry film lubricants and protectants for small arms and related gear. Their most popular products are TUF-CLOTH™ and TUF-GLIDE™; nearly half the deployed Troops in the War on Terror (Overseas Contingency Operation) enjoyed the use of these CLP (Clean, Lubricate, Protect) replacements. "Many people are shocked to learn that fact. Apparently no small business has ever accomplished that," Mark explained. Soldiers looked for alternatives to CLP when their mission demands revealed the short comings of mil-spec oil based "wet" small arms lubricants.

Sentry Solution's TUF-CLOTH first saw field testing in the Gulf War courtesy of USMC Special Operations teams. "I quit my job and joined my father (the developer of our product line) in early 1992," Mark continued, "By that time Sentry Solution's products were undergoing field testing in deserts, jungles and the frozen north." The initial testing proved that Sentry Solutions' oil-free gun care products not only lubed their weapons but actually kept firearms cleaner by preventing any buildup of fouling and debris.

Finding Time to Train...It's Harder Than It Sounds
By Waysun Johnny Tsai

One of the questions that seems to pop up here and there at my gym in Chicago is "SiJo, when do you get a chance to train?"

That question always gets me. I travel a lot, teach a lot, own two businesses, work on several projects at a time and am married with two children.
So when people give me excuses of how they are just too busy to train I understand, I just don't subscribe to that school of thought.

As busy humans, we make up all kinds of reasons of why we can't make time to workout, train or improve ourselves. Most of us rarely take action on the reasons of why we should.

It really is sad to see how many out of shape, couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag people there are today. Sad indeed.

As a trainer, it is pretty hard to get going after teaching five classes in a row. I do go running every other day, I have been slacking lately because of the cold weather (excuses).

I don't really get to workout with my students because I am busy teaching them, so I came up with a different solution...I became the student.

I wanted to take Kali classes but couldn't make my schedule match the programs around the city, so I launched a program and hired an instructor to teach it. Bam, instant in house Kali class.

I also teach CUMA Street Defense in downtown Chicago at www.mmamasterschicago.com once a week. I Johnnymake a point to attend the Brazillian Jiu Jitsu class that comes right before the class that I teach, even got a uniform with a white belt. My wife wants me to take ballroom dance lessons with her, so I found an instructor that wants to trade defense lessons with his wife for dance lessons with mine.

My point is that anything is possible to the willing mind. Be creative, be inspired. Nothing worthwhile comes easy. I call up every friend of mine that owns a gun to go shooting, so I can spend time with them and enhance my skills at the same time. Shooting and milkshakes after, that's my motto. It works great.

Now, for the everyday person it may seem like I may have resources that others don't, but this is TRAINERS COMMAND POST. Most of us on this site are indeed trainers or instructors that haved some kind of intructor network that we can tap into. Again, we just have to stay inspired. I don't want to be that fat 65 year blackbelt instructor that can't see my feet or touch my shoulders, even more I want to be able to race my kids down the block without being winded.

Another thing is we have to stay ahead of our students. How can we teach them to push themselves beyond their comfort zone if we don't do it ourselves? We hear and preach it all of the time "lead by example".

It doesn't matter how awesome we were in our glory days, what matters is who we are today and what we are doing to grow NOW. I'm not being a hypocrite, I look in the mirror everyday and see many things that can I improve on.

I know that I am not the ripped 22 year old tournament fighter anymore, but I enjoy sparring with them. Hell, my arm was in a cast from a groundfighting class two years ago, elbow still hurts from tendonitis.

I'm only 38 years old and I also have two bad ankles, a bad right knee, lower back problems and have had reconstructive surgery on my right rotator cuff. It would be very easy for me to give up the martial arts today, but I don't want to...I'm inspired.

So the next time you find yourself being lazy and want to use your injuries, job or kids as an excuse, think of all of the reasons of why you should train. Then get your butt in the gym. Trust me, it's only going to be 40 degrees tonight and I won't feel like going for my midnight run, but I will because I have to. I'm going to throw on some old guy ointment, my elbow brace, my hoody and just run. I'm going to run because it makes me feel alive, the pain keeps me sharp and focused. I know that I have to stay sharp and focused for my students and my family. How can I teach my students urban survival if I myself am a quitter that submits and taps out to every obstacle thrown in my path by life.

Remember that which does not make you stronger, will kill you...

International Training Inc. Sees Success in Training Translate to Competition Championships and Titles

Team ITI Group Shot
The common refrain or question throughout 2010 as the International Training, Inc. (ITI)
.
Competitive Shooting Team blazed its way through the IDPA circuit from North Carolina to New Mexico was, "who the heck are these guys?" The ITI team began its efforts in 2009 and fully developed its plans and its competitive team in the early months of 2010.

This year has been filled with team training, training provided by ITI to competitive shooters and a growing record of success at IDPA and USPSA events. The team members are a balanced mix of ITI instructor cadre and sponsored shooters from a variety of backgrounds with one thing in common - speed and accuracy!

When you're in the training business, there is no substitute for demonstrating in clearly certain terms that you are who and what you say you are as a firearms instructor! Team ITI set out to accomplish two objectives - first, to clearly demonstrate that they know their firearms business through performance against specific standards under the pressure of intense competition and second, to gain exposure for ITI and WSI through that same excellent performance.

Team ITI's record is eleven state and regional championships in the Master Class of IDPA, an additional fourteen finishes in the top five positions of the Master and Expert Class of IDPA and three finishes in the top three positions of USPSA competitions.

ITI trains approximately 2500 to 3000 students each year at its Virginia and Texas training sites. About 70% of those students undertake firearms training with ITI and the skill levels vary from those who have never held a pistol to highly skilled special operations personnel. Instructors have to be on their mark every hour of every day. They must know what and how to do the training to provide students with the best possible learning experience all of which is rooted in the fundamentals of shooting.

Team ITI used the fundamentals they teach every day to the students of ITI. This seemingly simple set of concepts proved to be the formula for success time after time at each competition. No secret techniques, no special guns and gear - just practice, practice and more practice of fundamentals against a standard of excellence.

Throughout 2010, Team ITI repeatedly demonstrated their skills as the buzzer sounded. When the pistol holstered and before the smoke could clear, audience after audience was asking - "Who are these guys?" It's about showing everyone that ITI, in the WSI family of companies, strives for excellence. ITI knows how and what to do with a firearm!
