Greetings!
With this edition of the LBM Newsletter we are proud to introduce a new column that is all about training. And not just about the training that we've read about again and again. Yes, it seems that everyone has some sort of training program from self-defense to how to become a Navy SEAL in just one afternoon and three easy steps. The reality is though, there are a lot of very excellent instructors and programs out there that are not getting their just due. Why don't you read or hear more about them? Probably because these guys and gals are spending their time training and perfecting their techniques instead of self promoting. So, without further adieu, let LBM introduce you to Master Waysun Johnny Tsai, considered to be one of the world's foremost experts in practical street defense and the chief instructor in North America in the Tsai's Family Shaolin Chuan Fa Kung Fu System. He holds the rank of eighth degree black sash in both the Tsai Family system and in Tai Kit Kuen. Master Tsai has over 25 years experience teaching martial arts and he continues to reach students through live training, books, magazines, television, DVD's and online media including YouTube. Master Tsai will be our guest columnist every other issue starting with this newsletter. |
BLACKHAWK! CQC SERPA Tough Enough to Survive Anything; A Testimonial |
My name is Lance Corporal JS of the British Army. Up until mid November last year I was serving in Helmand province in Southern Afghanistan. My entire rucksack, kit, rifle magazines, including my personal weapon, were either destroyed or badly damaged in an explosion caused by a pressure plate IED. Four months later, I received all my kit back from Afghanistan and had the chance to look through it. Inside the box were some of the bits of kit I had on me during the blast; broken compass, damaged goggles, etc. However, the one piece of kit that I had on my person at the time that wasn't damaged was my BLACKHAWK! CQC SERPApistol holster which was fully intact and fully functional. It had a few scratches but was otherwise untouched. I was taken aback a little and will always keep it as a keepsake, and hopefully, get the chance to use it again in the future. Some of my comrades are preparing to deploy within the next weeks. I've passed the word around and told them how well my pistol holster held up and how impressed I was to find it still intact. Now, they are all cutting about with new BLACKHAWK! holsters. I just wanted to say how impressed I was by the quality of my holster and how it withstood such an explosion unscathed. I shall always turn to BLACKHAWK!for future kit and will always speak highly of BLACKHAWK! Thank you.

ATN's Monoculars Receive High Scores from NTOA Member Tested and Recommended Program |
The National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) complete its review and testing of ATN's MVM-14-3P Night Vision Monocular which received a score of 4.51 out of a possible 5 and ATN's 6015-WPT Night Vision Monocular which received an overall score of 4.9 out of a possible 5. An officer commented on the ATN MVM-14-3P, "The view through the monocular was superb. The view was clear and crisp and bright allowing one to easily distinguish features of what was being observed. I would recommend this device for service with police patrol and tactical units." An officer testing the 6015-WPT said, "I really enjoy the clearer image unlike most NVD's that illuminate in the typical green hue....I would recommend this unit (ATN 6015-WPT) to any agency that is looking at purchasing quality NVD's." In particular, one officer tested the unit during a night time SCUBA dive and greatly appreciated the "clear image" underwater. | RAM IT, PIT IT, BACK OUT, SLIDE, TURN, BRAKE AND ABOVE ALL ELSE...KEEP YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME AND EYES ON YOUR ROUTE! |
In a world where even domestic work can quickly turn into a threat scenario, International Training Incorporated (ITI)trains students to be not just better drivers, but self-aware hard targets that can recognize, evade and prevail. Len Waldron, on assignment for Tactical Weapons magazine, attended a week-long situational awareness training exercise at ITI's Dilley, Texas facility. With both a high-speed hard surface training track and muddy, wet, and steep off road training areas, the staff at ITI provided training and increasingly complicated scenarios to the writer whose only previous exotic driving experience was teen-age years on a Missouri farm and a collection of near-death experiences in his daily commute to Manhattan. Stressing first the mental aspects of situational awareness such as route selection and threat assessment; the hands-on training included evasion, pitting (causing another car to spin off the road), ramming (busting past a stationary vehicle on an improved road) as well as mud-slinging and gear grinding off-road maneuvering. Check out www.tactical-life.com and upcoming issues of Tactical Weapons for the full story.

Bob Shell's Blog |
As always I look forward to attending the largest gun related trade show held. This year it is in Las Vegas at the Sands Center and will be there for at least three more years. Before this year it was at the Convention Center which is in my estimation easier to get in and out. It has been held in other cities as well including last year. Be as it may be the show was so large that it would be very difficult to see everything. They had two very large floors covered with exhibitors plus some in the large hallways. Good legs and roller skates would be helpful neither which I possess. It was pretty crowded at times though the last day wasn't quite as bad. All of the booth holders stated that they considered the four day event successful. A lot of business was transacted between exhibitors and visitors. Because of the hostility toward guns in Washington business is brisker than normal. The legitimate fear that the government wants to restrict various guns has caused many folks to buy and stock up on guns and ammo. There were over 58,000 attendees present who included dealers, media and other gun related business people. There were thousands of exhibitors present. The show isn't open to the general public. Like most gun and trade shows there were no incidents as people in the trade are well behaved and polite toward each other. Many of the people who work at the exhibits are very helpful and knowledgeable though near the end of the show they are ready to return home. To read more of Bob Shell's blog, click here.

Reality Based Training - Let's Keep it Practical | |

"Tacticool." A fun word created by bloggers. So many different "Reality Based" street self defense programs are launching across the country with guys running around in digital camo TDUs, knife fighting or disarming assault rifles. Great stuff...if you are on a SWAT team or in the sandbox. Many of these bloggers are not. Many people who take these training courses are just weekend warriors. The "reality" of it all is that "street defense" programs are truly needed in today's stressful economy and violent times. Just the other day I witnessed a fight jump off from a simple fender bender during a funeral. Sad times indeed, but not one assault rifle was pulled! Training programs need to stay practical and realistic to the environment of those being trained. For example, correctional officers are usually unarmed inside the jails and could end up in a fight on any given day. They need strong empty handed "ARC" (all range combat) skills. Police officers need weapon retention skills, college kids on campus don't (yet) and the outdoor sportsman on a trail might run into some trouble. You get the picture. I was using one of Jim Wagner's Reality Based Blades the other day while training for a new instructional DVD that I am about to film. While playing with it, I thought to myself "what knife isn't reality based?" Sharp pointy edged things are all petty serious to me. No offense Mr. Wagner, but a tad bit gimmicky. My goal with this column is to offer monthly, practical self defense training tips for tactical operators and the not so "tactical"; a "how to" with the empty hand, impact, improvised and edged weapons. I am also open to reviewing knives, tactical pens and other gear. Just email me at sifujohnnytsai@gmail.comand I will be sure to get back to you. I look forward to serving this community. Feel free to visit my website www.tsaiskungfu.net. Thanks for reading and HAVE A SAFE DAY!

KodaBow - Use Shadows to Your Advantage |

Whether stalking on the ground or setting up in a tree stand with a climber, use the projected position of the sun as it moves across the sky to help conceal your movement by keeping yourself in the shadows. Better than any camo pattern, it means looking for and easing into the shadows cast by the large trees when stalking an animal. Take the time to think through the path of the afternoon sun to minimize the "skylight or illumination effect" as you position your tree stand in relation to game trails and expected deer movement. Sit in the darker shadows when setting up on a field edge and improve your chances to draw or get into shooting position without being detected. Stay Tuned as KodaBow gets ready to release new product in the coming weeks. |
Max Michel Breaks Records, Misses First Place at US National Steel Championship by .01 Seconds
|

Max Michel narrowly missed first place at the US National Steel Championship, held in Titusville, FL, from March 24 through the 29th. In its 4th year of being held at the Titusville Rifle & Pistol Club, the US National Steel Championship has quickly developed a reputation as being one of the premier shooting competitions in the country. Michel was behind by 2 seconds going into the last stage and broke the record on "Outer Limits" while under pressure with 11.11 seconds. Max broke his second record of the day during the "Pendulum" stage when he shot 9.29 seconds. He came in second place overall, only .01 seconds behind west coast shooter K.C. Eusebio, who placed first in Open Division for 2010.
Max Michel and Eusebio both shattered the old Open Division match record score of 80.09. That record was set by Eusebio during the 2007 competition. This year Michel shot 78.02, only to be bested by Eusebio who retained his title of Match Record Holder by shooting a 78.01, beating out Michel for the top spot and title by .01 of a second. |
