Public Relations for the Real World
March 18, 2010
Issue 32

Greetings!

Laura Burgess Marketing has finalized our second survey on how manufacturers or PR firms can work with our industry media and form better relationships. Even though LBM had a pretty good idea of the outcome, there is ALWAYS room to improve. The basis of the writer survey was to finally have some statistics for potential clients that are new to writer relations. I believe all you shooters out there would use the term "back-up."

Perhaps some of the most interesting results were that you, our industry journalists, are not just looking to receive new product information (in a time appropriate and comprehensive manner), but really want to bring more to the table as far as developing long-term relationships with manufacturers, their engineers and marketing teams. And manufacturers, engineers and marketers should be jumping at the chance to work with people that have not only real world work experience, but the opportunity to have played with all the toys, and perhaps have built a couple themselves.  Often, I have heard complaining corporate types regarding "herding writers" when there are many other "important" matters that need their attention. Our industry writers and editors are our scouts, our standard bearers, our advisors, our canaries in the mine, our fortune tellers, and occasionally just our good friends. If there is anything that LBM really took away from this survey, it's that we are lucky to be in an industry where the associated media has a real heart-felt interest in the subject and the people behind it. So, thank you to all who participated!
The History of the BLACKHAWK! SERPA

Serpa sledge marine
In December 2003, Mike Noell, President and CEO of BLACKHAWK! had a vision to grow BLACKHAWK! and diversify the company and product lines from its base of tactical nylon for special operators and military personnel. BLACKHAWK! Began to hire key people to bring new products into new markets. One of the first items on the list was holsters.

By SHOT SHOW 2004 BLACKHAWK! introduced their new leather holster line and the injection-molded SERPA holster made its debut. The first SERPA was a concealment GLOCK SERPA.

The SERPA's success lay with a resoundingly favorable response by the media and the elegant simplicity of the system making the SERPA a "no brainer" sell to distributors and street officers alike.

Unlike many new product launches that fade away or are replaced with newer, younger models, the SERPA holster has continued to evolve into one of the leading holsters worn by law enforcement, military personnel, security professionals, concealed carry civilians and sport shooters.  Since 2004, the SERPA holster family has grown as customers demand new levels of retention, light options, finish options and additional model configurations.

The most recent evolution to the SERPA system was a direct result of a customer request.  The German Army required its soldiers to wear their handguns on their vest while in a vehicle and on a thigh rig when out of the vehicle. The intent was to keep the handgun IN THE HOLSTER when moved from vest to leg. BLACKHAWK! stepped up to the bid request with the SERPA Quick Disconnect System which utilizes an adapter on the SERPA holster and places the holster mount on the leg and vest platform. The holstered handgun now could be safely and securely moved from one platform to the other. A simple rotation one-click clockwise, is all it takes to lock the two release tabs into place. After much stringent testing the German Army chose the BLACKHAWK! SERPA QD system and Level III SERPA holsters, one of the first militaries to choose the highest level of retention for their soldiers.

Since then, the effectiveness of immediate safe and secure transition from various platforms, the system modularity, the speed and commonality of training has led to the selection of the SERPA retention holster system and select accessories for the Elite Warriors of the United States Joint Special Operations Community. The BLACKHAWK! SERPA story is the result of a vision to design a truly innovative product that would lead the way for continued evolution and adaption.

Tough Enough to Take a Shotgun Blast from Just 16 Feet - Can Your Eyepro do That?

Revision Range
If you wear Revisions they can. Revision Eyewear put their Sawfly Eyewear System and Desert Locust Goggles to the test at the Ethan Allen Firing Range in Jericho, Vermont. The results were quite literally mind blowing, with lenses able to withstand a 12 gauge shotgun blast from just 16 feet. Good thing they caught it all on camera; click here to watch the footage on YouTube.

Golf
As long as golf irons are made from metal and there is water and/or fertilizer involved, there is the potential for rusting. A little extra care is all it takes. Tuf-Cloth and Tuf-Glide are perfect to protect your golf clubs and equipment from the harmful moisture that breeds rust.

As explained by another golf enthusiast, "We've seen a couple of cases where golf clubs have rusted due to either sea spray or fertilizer, so some care should be taken." Our Marine Tuf-Cloth is made especially for saltwater protection, so if you play anywhere near the ocean this is the protection of choice.

ITI Evasive and Defensive Driver Course

It could never happen to you. Whether you are a government official, corporate VIP, journalist or just a tourist, carjackings, ambushes and assassination attempts can and do happen in foreign countries, as well as, in our own country. Being prepared to recognize the scenario and react appropriately can make all the difference in your and your passengers' safety.

evasive driving
ITI has developed a comprehensive program that is designed specifically around the instinctive reactionary process associated with crash avoidance and expanding the security envelope beyond the confines of the vehicle. The program was developed through careful analytical studies of vehicle assaults on government and corporate personnel. By understanding and practicing certain techniques such as modulated ABS and transitional braking, vehicle dynamics, high speed tactical driving, attack recognition and counter-surprise, tactical evasive and attack scenarios you will be better prepared to react successfully.

This ITI unique and life-saving course is scheduled for May 7, August 21 and November 9, 2010.

ITI is the host for the 2010 Tactical Shootout in support of Law Enforcement United to be held on April 17th and 18th at the ITI Virginia Campus located in West Point, VA. For more information on how to participate or to attend as media, contact bwright@itiwsi.com.

Grizzly Premium Self-Defense Ammunition
Right now I can't tell you a great deal about this .45 ACP ammunition or bullet other than it will soon be available.

The limited testing I have conducted so far has shown very promising terminal performance with, as you would expect, large crush cavities.

Check out an upcoming issue of Shooting Illustrated for a complete review.

Writer Survey Results from LBM Survey Now Available

In January 2010, Laura Burgess Marketing hosted a month long survey to find out what writers and editors need to effectively and efficiently produce stories about YOUR products.

The survey was hosted to over 1,000 industry writers and editors. We received 259 responses from industry types who work in magazines, newspapers, television, radio, internet publications and blogs. We wanted to know what type of information they were interested in, how they wanted it delivered and what would hold them back from reviewing a product and writing a piece.

Collapsible Glow in the Dark Crab Traps and Accessories

Danielson Group

The Danielson® Company has created an all new, never been seen before line of "Glow in the Dark" crab traps and accessories.  Consumers will no longer have to continue purchasing and attaching glow sticks to current equipment as our new innovation eliminates this added, ongoing expense.  The new Danielson® "Glow in the Dark" traps and accessories feature a 3-hour patent pending glow paint that illuminates your crab traps and accessories to maximize attracting crabs into your traps and hoops.

Anyone who has gone crabbing has used the theory that the catch is not only attracted to the smell of the bait, but is also lured in by light.  Danielson® took this "light theory" and applied it directly to the traps and accessories to create a product line-up that will be cost effective to consumers and unique to the marketplace. Our unique glow feature is strategically applied to the trap doors to illuminate the entrances to the cages, and on the bait cages to lure the crabs to the bait that is positioned in the middle of the trap. The glow traps and accessories include 4 pots, 2 hoop nets, bait barrels, bait cages, gates, the bait pin, as well as the famous crab snare.

For decades, Danielson® traps and accessories have earned the respect and loyalty of crabbing enthusiasts who rely on the brand for innovative design and quality construction.
