Greetings!

The Steering Committee is focusing its efforts on securing financing.  We are getting drafts of the floor plans for our new store ready for display soon!  These should be available to the public in the near future, and will be on display at our Annual Meeting on Tuesday, September 29th (see below for more details).  We are still working towards our membership goals of 300 members by the end of this month, and 500 by store open!  The importance of membership cannot be overemphasized--this is a community-owned market, so our ability to secure financing and close on the site hinges on being able to show true community support.  If you have not become a member yet, please do not wait!  Now is the time!  Go to our Membership Page for complete instructions on how to become a member online, or through the mail.  If you are a member--THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!  You want this store to succeed as much as we do--spread the word!  As members, it is you who are our very best membership recruiters.  Tell your friends, neighbors, co-workers and family about our project and why you believe in it--and why joining now will make all the difference in the world, or at least to Terre Haute!

Keep reading for a redux on our wonderful Salsa Contest (Wow!  What a great time!), details for our upcoming Annual Meeting, and the announcement of our October 31st 5K Fun Run!  We also have a brief word on some confusion regarding the status of the property we intend to purchase--see "Do We Own It?" below for more.
The Salsa Contest Redux!

Terre Foods hosted Terre Haute's first salsa contest Saturday, August 22nd at the Downtown Farmers Market. We were extremely pleased with the community response-- with 26 wonderfully creative salsa entries, a long line of eager taste testers, a great panel of judges.  It was an incredible day!

The four winners took home a Terre Foods tote bag containing a $50 gift certificate to the Downtown Farmers Market, compliments of Downtown Terre Haute and Terre Foods.  Our winners are:
  • Antonia Bowden-- Tasters' Choice
  • Jude Ciancone-- Specialty
  • Ella Ingram- Tomato-based, cooked
  • Tom Seventy-- Tomato-based, raw
Terre Foods thanks the salsa makers for their great salsas!

We appreciate the many market-goers who happily sampled salsas, voted for their favorites with donations and chose the Tasters' Choice winner. We would also like to thank our official judges for their expert opinions, their willingness to sample 26 salsas at 11 am and their ability to choose only three winners from such an impressive line-up.

Our panel of judges were:
  • Chris Kraut- executive chef of Buttonwoods at Sycamore Farms
  • Andrew Conner- director of Downtown Terre Haute
  • Karla Hansen-Speer- Terre Foods steering committee member from Tucson, AZ
  • Dan Clark- salsa lover at large
  • Mark Minster- salsa lover at large
  • Stephanie Salter- Tribune Star
And here is one of the winning recipes--try it before salsa-season ends, and brag to your friends that it's an award-winning recipe!

Roasted Tomato Salsa
Submitted by Ella Ingram
1.5 lbs Roma tomatoes
1/2 white onion
2-3 garlic cloves
1-2 jalapenos, fresh or equivalent from jar
1 bunch cilantro (use to taste)
Salt (use to taste)

Cut Romas in half. Roast under broiler until skins crack and are partially blackened. Chop onion and garlic. Sauté lightly in a small amount of oil just until soft. Process everything in a food processor until no large chunks remain. It helps to process the onion, garlic, and jalapenos first to get those items well chopped. Add cilantro last. Add salt to taste. Excess can be frozen, but the best taste comes straight from the food processor bin.
Annual Meeting, Sept. 29th
Vigo County Main Library, 7-9pm

Yup, it's that time again!  Please plan to attend this important meeting, where we will get everyone up to speed on all that's happened in the past year (a lot!), and what our road map looks like to the opening of the store.  At this meeting, we will have presentations about the store purchase, news on our efforts to hire a General Manager, where we stand on our financing, and much more.  We will also have architectural drawings of the building plans--come see for yourself how the store is shaping up!

This meeting is open to the public--please bring along your friends!  The more, the merrier--and the more members, the better for our store!

Do We Own It?

We've been hearing some confusion of late about whether or not we have a claim on the building at 7th & Poplar.  Most of this confusion stems from the fact that there is still a sign on the property announcing it as "available".  It is NOT true that this building is currently available.  Terre Foods Cooperative Market, Inc. currently holds a purchase agreement on this property which does not expire until the middle of October.  We hope to either secure financing by that point and close on the property, or to obtain an extension so that we can continue to pursue financing.  But the property is emphatically NOT available.  We have been trying to have this sign taken down, or at least covered with a "sale pending" sign, but so far to no effect.  We are also negotiating to be able to put our own signs up on the building (e.g., "Coming Soon--Terre Foods!"), but as of this writing, nothing has been decided.  Since we do not in fact own the property outright, we have very limited rights as to what is or is not displayed.  But I hope this clears up any confusion--we DO have a purchase agreement, the property is NOT currently on the market, and we ARE planning on purchasing this property.  And then we can start the build out.... =)
See you at the meeting!

In Cooperation,
