Michael Pollan: We Are Headed Toward a Breakdown in Our Food System

Here's a fascinating interview with Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food.  Pollan discusses a variety of topics, from the effect the new Whitehouse Administration may have on our food systems to struggles with getting children to eat their veggies.  Enjoy!

Greetings!

The Blueberry Festival was better than we ever dreamed!  Over 1,000 people came through and enjoyed our fresh, yummy blueberries from a northern Indiana farm, on top of ice cream!  We ran out of our local ice cream early in the day due to the unexpectedly high turnout.  We will be better prepared next year!  Overall, the event made over $4,500, with the profits going to both Terre Foods Cooperative Market and Downtown Terre Haute.  And we had an awesome time putting it on.  That was one successful event!

The Steering Committee continues its work finalizing the business plan, having our financial numbers reviewed, contracting with architects, and all the other things that will go into opening the store.  But the most important piece of the puzzle is you!  We need your membership now more than ever to make our store a reality.  If you want to see this store in Terre Haute, and you believe like we do, that it will help revitalize our historic Downtown, strengthen our local economy, and bring wholesome food options to our city, then please become a member today!  Click on the Membership link to the left, or click HERE to go to our Membership page and sign up online, or download and mail in your membership application.  We have payment plans available to suit any budget--join today!
Show us your Salsa!

Calling all salsa chefs!  Things are heating up at the Downtown Terre Haute Farmers Market and to celebrate, Terre Foods is sponsoring the first ever Salsa Contest on Aug. 22nd.  In order to make this a success, we need contestants!  Take a chance to show off your salsa skills and submit your favorite salsa for a chance to win some local goodies.

There will be three salsa categories; tomato-based raw, tomato-based cooked, and specialty, which may be raw or cooked.  What sets specialty salsas aside is the use of non-traditional ingredients, such as fruit or leaving out tomatoes altogether.

Terre Foods will assemble a panel of local chefs and personalities to judge the winners in each category.  In addition, market-goers will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite salsa by placing a donation in the jar next to their top choice.  The salsa that earns the highest donations will be the "Tasters' Choice" (all donations will go to Terre Foods).  Winners will each receive a $50 Gift Certificate to the Downtown Farmer's Market, and will have the opportunity to have their prize-winning recipes on the Terre Foods' website and distributed on the Terre Foods mailing list.
