Join your local CSA!
A central tenet of our new cooperative market will be to support our local farmers, and to source as much local goods from them as possible.  But even before our storefront is open, there are other ways we can support our local farmers.  One popular option is to join a CSA--a Community Supported Agriculture program.  A CSA is a subscription service where you pay the farmer upfront for a seasonal share in the farm, and then you receive boxes of fresh produce throughout the season.  It's a great way to help farmers have a stable income and increased planning capabilities, while also giving the consumer lovely fresh veggies, typically at lower-than-market rates.

Terre Haute currently boasts two CSAs, both of which are now taking subscriptions for the 2009 growing season:

Greetings!

Starting a co-op is a big job, and involves all kinds of work to do in many venues.  You can help our co-op become a reality by participating in any (or all!) of the volunteer opportunities when they come available.  Volunteering is a fun way to help get our store off the ground, and it's indispensable to the project.

Please take a moment to look at some of our upcoming volunteer opportunities, and participate as your time and resources allow.  We need help from everyone we can get--We Need You!
Volunteer for the White Violet Center's Earth Day!

Tigerella tomatoesTerre Foods will be an active part of White Violet Center's 11th Annual Earth Day Celebration at the Woods on Saturday, April 18th from 11am-3pm.  We will have an information booth in the vendor tent along with volunteers operating a grilling stand featuring local burgers and lamb bratwursts from Royer Farm Fresh Meats in Clinton, Indiana.  We will also be offering cold vegetarian lunch items as well, things like pasta and bean salads.  Proceeds from these booths will benefit the co-op.

How can you help?

Help us staff our booths!  We need volunteers to help run both of these booths; grilling burgers and brats and the vegetarian salad stand.

Also:

Bring a donation salad for sale!  If you'd like to help, but can't commit too much time, we're in need of tasty vegetarian lunch items to sell!  Since the Sisters of Providence run a bake sale, we won't be bringing any sweet foods, but pasta salads, bean salads, and other snacks are all welcome.  Don't forget to include a notecard listing the ingredients in your dish!

If you're interested in either or both of these volunteer opportunities, please contact Tammy Tintjer at tammy@terrefoods.org by April 17th.

We need an accountant!

As our project gets further along, we will need some professional help in a variety of places (yes, probably that kind of professional help, too!  ;-)  Most immediately, we very much need to recruit an accountant to help us keep track of our cash flow.  This position would largely entail keeping track of sources of income and categorizing its outflow, for the purposes of  keeping our income sources separate and well-ordered.  Initially, this position should be low maintenance.  We would very much appreciate someone who can either donate a few hours of service to us per month, or perhaps give us a discounted rate.  As time goes on and we become more financially viable, we would be able to begin paying a full rate, probably before the store itself is open.  If you have the relevant skills, or if you know someone who does and who you believe would be sympathetic with our project, please let Robyn Morton know at robyn@terrefoods.org.

(NB:  We are NOT tax-deductible for the purposes of donating pro bono services.)
Spring Thyme Plant and Herb Fair
May 9, 2009

Last year's Herbe Faire was a huge success for getting the word out about our co-op, and we hope to do it again!  I met wonderful folks who were enthusiastic about the project, and really enjoyed myself, not to mention nearly doubling the size of our interest list at the time.  If you'd like to help us staff a table at the herb fair, please contact Robyn Morton at robyn@terrefoods.org.
Come on out and support your local co-op!

In Cooperation,

Robyn Morton
