A central tenet of our new cooperative market will be to support our local farmers, and to source as much local goods from them as possible.  But even before our storefront is open, there are other ways we can support our local farmers.  One popular option is to join a CSA--a Community Supported Agriculture program.  A CSA is a subscription service where you pay the farmer upfront for a seasonal share in the farm, and then you receive boxes of fresh produce throughout the season.  It's a great way to help farmers have a stable income and increased planning capabilities, while also giving the consumer lovely fresh veggies, typically at lower-than-market rates.

Terre Haute currently boasts two CSAs, both of which are now taking subscriptions for the 2009 growing season:

Greetings!

Your Steering Committee is plugging away at site selection.  We are now in the process of meeting with various building contractors to get good-faith estimates on costs for two locations in the downtown area.  With those numbers, and the data we have from our recently-complete market analysis, we should be able to determine the most sound location for our new store.

I wanted to take this time, however, to bring you some really big news from our political world that just came across my desk this morning.  The New York Times, and the Washington Post, both report that the Obamas will break ground this morning on the first White House Garden since WWII!  This is obviously huge news for the local, wholesome foods movement, and could finally signal the sea change we've all been waiting for.  The leaders of our nation will put the 1,100 square foot organic garden on the south lawn, near their daughter's swing set, and visible from the street!  (How many neighborhoods are there in our own community where a front-lawn garden would be against regulation?)  Here are the articles for your morning reading pleasure:

No Space to garden?

Terre Haute Community GardenJoin the Community Garden!  The Community Garden is a joint project of Indiana State University, Purdue Extension, Sisters of Providence, White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, Catholic Charities of Terre Haute, Downtown Terre Haute Inc. and the City of Terre Haute.

If you want to have a 10-foot by 10-foot plot at the community garden, located at 217 N. 11th St., attend the one of the following meetings: Noon to 1 p.m. Monday, March 23; or 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 25. A call-out and organizational session for the Downtown Farmer's Market will follow the March 25 meeting.

Plots are free for anyone to grow on, but it's asked that a portion of the produce grown on the land be donated to Catholic Charities Terre Haute.
