Purposeful News
August 2009
Greetings!

Time flies whether we are having fun or not. Its hard to believe school is already in session when it seems as if summer had just arrived.

Even more amazing to me than the quick passage of time are the rapid changes in our world due to technology, especially the way technology allows us to exchange and assimilate information.

This month's newsletter is geared to help you feel the faster pace and engage in some ways to actively participate in technology. I've included a link to a video, as well as  links to comment areas on my blog so you can easily interact with me to refute, agree or add to what you see in this newsletter.

The world can pass us by if we let it. Don't let it pass you by. Climb aboard the technology wagon and learn to use it to your advantage...and hang on for the ride.  What are you waiting for?

Live and learn,

Janna

Rapid Change Calls for Leadership, Not Management

Management is obsolete. Leadership is now necessity. How are you preparing to lead? How do you handle all of the information coming at you?

Times have changed in the realm of management since the advent of computer technology. In the old days,we had managers who taught people what to do. Now, because what needs "doing" changes in the blink of an eye, it is imperative that we become leaders and start teaching people how to think.

The five minute video, "Did You Know?" brings our fast-paced world to light. To quote some of the stats in the video, did you know?

  • The top 10 in-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004.
  • We are currently preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist, using technologies that haven't been invented, in order to solve problems we don't even know are problems yet.
  • It is estimated that a week's worth of the New York Times contains more information than a person was likely to come across in a lifetime in the 18th century.
  • It is estimated that 4 exabytes (4.0x10^19) of unique information will be generated this year. That is more than the previous 5000 years.
After you watch the video, I'd love to know what you think.  The video and its music alone will make your heart pound. What will you do with what you know?

Your Body Speaks: What is It Saying to Others?

Your body speaks.  Do you know what it is saying to others? Don't get me wrong, words matter tremendously. However, if our body language betrays us, the perfect words have little effect.

Carol Kinsey Goman in her article "Body Language: Mastering the Silent Language of Leadership" says the following:

All leaders express enthusiasm, warmth and confidence as well as arrogance, indifference and displeasure through their facial expressions, gestures, touch and use of space. If an executive wants to be perceived as credible and forthright, her or she has to think "outside the speech" and recognize the importance of nonverbal communication.

She also mentions 5 key points that I think we should all keep in mind, whether we are executives or not:

  1. Watch those facial expressions.
  2. Talk with your hands if you know what they're saying.
  3. Show your whole body (get out from behind the lectern)
  4. Don't go overboard.
  5. Align your words and your gestures.

Be sure to check out the entire article for what she says about each of the above. Do you have any tips you would like to share about expressing great nonverbal communication?  If so, you know where to go...to the blog

Coach's Challenge: Pick out one of the items on the list above and practice it this week.  What do you notice about yourself?
