Purposeful News
March 2009
Greetings!

I don't know about anyone else, but I've found myself running at a pretty fast clip in 2009.  I love the pace and I do love change and making change happen, but at times it does get a little challenging keeping all the balls in the air. Nonetheless, I am still getting things done!

In this issue, we'll take a final "tree top" view of what it takes to get things done in a stress-free manner.  We'll also look at two opposite personality styles and how they respond to the pace of life.  You'll be given tips to address those two styles, a challenge for the month and a special free offer to help identify your own unique personality style and motivators.

As always, I'm thankful that you allow me to visit your inbox each month with this newsletter.  It is my intent to encourage and assist you to be all that you can be, living into the life you were created to live. Please let me know how I can help you be better in what you do.

Be the change!

Warmly,

Janna

Who Are You: The Tortoise or the Hare?

How fast do you like to go? Do you like to sprint, jog, or walk through life?  Today we will take a look at two opposite personalities in the DISC behavioral model, the "D" and the "S", and provide some tips for peaceful interaction with the two.  We'll be examining each as they resemble the characters in the familiar tale "The Tortoise and the Hare".

Let's first look at Mr. Hare, whom I'm likening to the Dominant Director "D".  If you are a hare, you are ambitious, forceful, decisive and direct.  You love to win and can't wait to get to the finish line!  Your independent and competitive nature helps you to run with no fear.

On the other hand, Mr. Tortoise, the Steady Relator "S", is methodical, systematic, reliable and steady.  He is modest and relaxed, sometimes hiding in his shell.  Winning is not that important, as long as he finishes...and the team gets along with each other.

Can you see the contrast?  As with any two different personality styles, communication challenges abound between these particular two.  Here are some tips to dealing with each, no matter who you are:

Mr. Hare" (D) likes you to:
  • Pick up the pace
  • Be clear, specific and to the point
  • Stick to business & be organized

Mr. Tortoise" (S) likes you to:

  • Begin with a personal comment to break the ice
  • Slow down, take it easy
  • Present your case softly with nonthreatening tone

When we know ourselves for who we really are and can recognize others for who they are, we can greatly increase communication and understanding.  Experiment this week.  Look for the tortoises and hares in your life and adapt to fit their needs.  Both of you will benefit!

NOTE:  My special offer this month will help you enhance your interpersonal skills.  Take advantage of it at no obligation.
Let's Get it DONE!

You have more to do than you can possibly do.  You just need to feel good about your choices. - David Allen

Ready...Set...DO.  You've made and reviewed your lists and have some valuable time available.  It is time to finally get something done.  The goal in the "do" stage of David Allen's process is to "move from hope to trust in your actions" resulting in an immediate increase in your speed and effectiveness.  Allen gives us three models for making choices that when integrated into your routine, will help you feel good about your choices.  Following is a brief synopsis.

1.  Choosing Actions in the Moment (consider the following of each task, in the order below):
  • Context
  • Time available
  • Energy Available
  • Priority
2.  Evaluating Daily Work:
  • Doing predefined work
  • Doing work as it shows up
  • Defining your work

3. Reviewing Your Work:

  • 50,000+ feet: Life
  • 40,000 feet: Three- to five-year vision
  • 30,000 feet: One- to two-year goals
  • 20,000 feet: Areas of responsibility
  • 10,000 feet: Current projects
  • Runway: Current actions
There is definitely an art to getting things done.  Everything must be considered in its proper context as it interrelates to the rest of our lives.  Those who master the art of productivity set themselves apart from the rest in all that they do.

For more information about this process, I would be happy to consult with you.  Please use my contact information at left.  Additionally, check out the book "Getting Things Done" by David Allen.
