August 2008, Issue 1
Greetings!

Some of the toughest but most enriching internal work I've ever done has been with my personal coach as I've answered the question "Who am I?" apart from the roles I play and the job or ministry titles I've had.  As I've explored the depths of this question, I've realized that too often our identities are tied up in external factors that may not last.

Jobs change.  Seasons of life happen.  Circumstances of life aren't always in our control.  However, when we know who we are and what makes us able to excel at things that we do, other things just don't matter as much.

Today's issue will focus on authentic living.  Go beneath the surface.  Dig deep.  Maybe you'll discover something new about yourself.  If you need help diving in, hire a coach that can take you there.   Most importantly, enjoy the exploration!

Warmly,

Janna

Do you know who you truly are?  If you know, are you living accordingly? One of the most freeing things a person can do is to live according to their core values.  Unfortunately, most of us have never consciously worked with our values. Those who have may be unsure if their lives line up with them.

Core values are those 3-5 beliefs or convictions worth so much to us that we cannot live without them.  They are the reasons we do what we do, our "habits of the heart".  When our lives are out of alignment with our values (or when we live according to a value imposed upon us by someone else), we experience stress, frustration and discontentment.   On the contrary, authentic living produces peace and fulfillment.

Commit to knowing yourself better so you can experience the benefits of living authentically.  Click here for a tool to help you identify your values.   Narrow them down to the top 3-5 and you'll know essentially who you are.  Then stay tuned for next month's issue to discuss where you go from here.  If you can't wait until next month, feel free to contact me.
Testing Your Purpose
A good purpose statement pulls you toward it and resonates with your soul.  It might even give you goose bumps as you ponder what might happen should you live it out.  The thought of failing it might also invoke a sense of sadness.

Last month, I discussed discovering our purpose and provided an exercise to help do just that.  If you have written or even considered your life purpose statement, it is time to  put it to the test.  Here are some questions to determine how well it fits you:
  • Do you feel a connection to it?
  • Do you desire to fulfill it?
  • Are fulfilled when you act according to it?
  • Do your interests naturally gravitate toward fulfilling it?

Remember, your purpose statement is personal and you don't have to share it with anyone.  However, if you know your purpose and intentionally live your life to fulfill it, others will take notice.  You will have more energy with the clarity it provides.  Hang on for the ride and enjoy the journey!
