Learning to Lead Did you know that all of us were born to lead? All of us have someone who looks up to us in our unique spheres of influence. However, how many of us were ever taught how to lead?
I've been involved in a variety of leadership environments over the years, ranging from corporate to not-for-profit. Now that I am a trained coach, I wish would have had the leadership skills then that I do now.
Coaching and leadership go hand in hand because coaching skills equate to good leadership skills. Consider the four primary skill competencies of a professional coach:
- Listening
- Creating awareness/Asking questions
- Planning/Goal setting
- Managing progress/Accountability
How can proficiency in these skills benefit you? How can you gain that proficiency? First of all, start with a foundational skill and build upon it. Good coaching, leadership and relationships all start with good listening. If we can listen well, we can set ourselves up for success with the rest.
IN THE NEXT ISSUE: Steps to good listening. |
What Makes a Good Coach? Coaching produces results, but what "produces" a good coach? A good coach is made up of more than just education and experience. Coaching is a way of being.
If you are looking to hire a professional coach, you should:
First, look to see if they have been trained by an ICF (International Coaching Federation) accredited school. All coach training programs are not the same.
Second, look at the kind of person your coaching candidate is. Ask yourself, "Does this coach...
- care about people?
- have high personal standards and ambitions?
- demonstrate excellent communication skills?
- love to learn?
- walk his/her talk?
Third, ask for a complimentary consultation to see if you "connect" with the coach. You'll know if you do! Coaching is relational and the conversation should flow smoothly. When it flows well, great things can happen! |
