Power Failures:

Believe it or not, my family has already endured TWO power failures this fall... and one this weekend kept our neighbour's power off for over 24 hours.  Short power failures are easy to wait out, but the longer one's take a bit more ingenuity, so I thought a reminder of power failure procedures might be in order.

First Step - Be prepared

Set aside a special place for emergency supplies. It should be easily accessible in the dark, and every member of the family should know about it. Here's a list of emergency supplies to keep handy. The basics:
Flashlights, batteries
Battery-operated transistor radio and clock
Cell phone
Candles and waterproof matches or lighter
Extra blankets, coats, hats and gloves
Plastic garbage bags
First aid kit
Non-perishable foods, such as canned and dried goods
Bottled water
Disposable tableware and cutlery
Manual can openers
Colouring material, puzzles, books, battery operated games for the kids

Some other necessities:
Bottled water
Prescription drugs, contact lens solution
Extra cash
Extra car keys
Sleeping bags
Toilet paper, other personal toiletries
A loud whistle (this may come in handy if you have to attract attention)
Consider special needs of family members:

Is there a baby, child, grandparent or pet in your household? Take into account their needs and health issues, and make a specific plan to help them should an outage occur. Will you need to find special medication? A way to warm a baby bottle?

What to do if the power goes out
  • Determine if the power failure is limited to your home.
  • If your neighbour's power is still on, check your electrical panel to see if the main circuit breaker has tripped. Even if it appears to be on, turn the breaker off and back on again to ensure a good connection.
  • Hydro One WebsiteIf your electrical panel isn't the cause of the outage, call HydroOne 1-800-434-1235  - specifically for power outage reporting and updates. You can call any time, any day of the week.  If you have a computer with battery back-up, you can visit the website (click on logo above).
  • Power can be restored more easily if the load on the electric system is reduced. Turn off or unplug any appliances, computers or electronics you were using when the power went out to avoid power surges when power is restored. Leave one light turned on so you'll know when your power returns.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep your food as fresh as possible. Food will remain fresh or frozen for several hours if you keep the doors closed. Wrapping your freezer in a blanket or quilt will ensure your food stays good for up to 48 hours. If you must eat food that was refrigerated or frozen after a long power outage, check it carefully for signs of spoilage.
  • Don't light a fire indoors unless you have an approved fireplace or wood stove. If you're cold, put on layers of warm clothing instead.
  • Don't use barbecues, portable generators or propane or kerosene heaters indoors. Burning fuel in unventilated areas produces carbon-monoxide, a deadly, odourless gas.

Once the power is restored:

  • Make sure your fridge and freezer are back on. Check your appliance guides to determine whether food can be safely eaten or refrozen.
  • Give the electrical system a chance to stabilize. Turn on the essentials first, and wait 10-15 minutes before starting the rest.
  • Remember to reset all your clocks, automatic timers and alarms.
Restock your emergency cupboard so that supplies will be there next time you need them.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure... having that emergency kit on hand is the first step to weathering a winter storm or power outage safely and comfortably.
