Thought For The Day:

"Reputation is what other people know about you. Honor is what you know about yourself."
 ~ Lois McMaster Bujold
I will remember                    by Shelly Sargent

Every year at this time, we see display's of poppies on countertops everywhere.  And it never fails - every year, I hear at least one person say "I never buy a poppy - I just "re-use" the one from last year."   I suppose it saves you a buck or two in small change, but to anyone who does this - I have one thing to say:  "You just don't get it!"

PoppyI proudly buy a new poppy each year (often, I buy 2 or 3, since I apparently have a real gift for losing them!).  I never begrudge these purchases.

Each November since 1921, these humble poppies have adorned the shirt-fronts of Canadians as a symbol of remembrance for all those who have fallen in the line of duty.  The person who was responsible more than any other for the adoption of the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance in Canada was Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian Medical Officer hailing from the Guelph area, who was a soldier during the First World War, and wrote the infamous poem "In Flanders Fields".

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, I - along wih countless other proud Canadians - will pause in silent honour of those men and women who have served, and who continue to serve our country.

And in that brief pause, I will honour those who fought for Canada in WWI (1914-1918), WWII (1939-1945), and the Korean War (1950-1953), as well as those who have served since then.  I will remember that more than 1,500,000 Canadians have served Canada in this way, and and that over 100,000 have paid the ultimate sacrifice.  And I will voice a silent thank you to all service men & women, and pray that those serving right now will make it home safely.

A dollar or two donated to the Royal Canadian Legion to show our support of our men in uniform is a very small, but very significant gesture of support.  I make that small gesture proudly - I hope all other Canadians will join me and do the same.
