Hallowe-en Safety
Hallowe'en is upon us again and I'm sure finishing touches are going on costumes all over town. But before you send your little ghouls out for the night, remember:
● Parents are always concerned about the safety of the candy their kids bring home on Halloween, and especially when children have food or nut allergies, but after two recent recalls of Chinese-made candy, parents should be extra vigilant this year.
Melamine is an industrial chemical that should not appear in any food. Low levels of the chemical have been detected in candy and chocolate manufactured in China. Click here to find out what candy products have been recalled! ● October 31 is usually chilly so make sure that costumes are loose enough to be worn over warm clothing but not so baggy or long that trick or treaters can trip over their costumes. ● Have trick-or-treaters try on, walk and play in costumes and shoes in advance to make sure they fit properly and aren't too heavy or awkward. ● Make-up and face paint are better than wearing masks which can restrict breathing and/or vision. ● Swords, knives and similar accessories should be made of soft, flexible material - or better yet, left at home (unless Mom or Dad want to be carrying them) ● Make it a rule - children are not to eat any goodies until you inspect them. Make sure that your child eats dinner before they set out, so they'll be less tempted to eat their goodies along the way. ● Children should stay in well-lit areas and should only visit homes that have their outside lights turned on and should never go inside homes or cars. ● Review safety precautions with children before they head out for the evening. Plan your trick-or-treating route and supervision in advance. ● Children should walk, not run, from house to house and stay on the sidewalk or at the side of the road facing traffic, cross the road at the corner and look both ways before crossing the road. ● Get a flashlight with fresh batteries. A flashlight can help trick-or-treaters see and be seen, but it should never be directed at someone's eyes including those of passing motorists. Motorists ● Watch for children during the day and throughout the evening. Children will be heading to and from school in residential areas and may be wearing costumes that impede their vision. Obey posted speed limits and use extra caution as they may be distracted and not watching out for vehicles. ● Look for children crossing the street in the evening. They may be more difficult to see and they may not be paying attention to traffic, crossing the street in the middle of the block or between parked cars. Use caution when entering or leaving alleys and driveways. |
