Is the Glass Half Full...?
by Shelly Sargent
As the old saying goes, its been a nice summer, if you are a duck! The last few weeks have been pretty soggy - thats for sure. It would be very easy to complain (and I have been known to do that, truth be told) - dampness brings loads of problems - earwigs, mosquito's, mold... If you put a positive spin on it, though, rain also keeps the grass green, helps conserve water during lawn and garden chores and lowers the chance that we'll be hearing about bad grass fires due to dry conditions.
Where is the radio chick going with all of this, you may be asking? Well...we are still awaiting the CRTC ruling on our application to change 102.7FM from a information station to that of a re-broadcaster of 105.5FM. This repeater would be a major improvement to the service we can provide to Caledon and we'd really hoped we'd have an answer by end of July.
But it looks like things are pretty busy in Ottawa, so we're still waiting. But in the meantime, I have to find some way to put a positive spin on all this waiting....
So, ever the Pollyanna... I decided to write out a top ten list of reasons why it is a good thing we are still waiting for news of our repeater application:
#10: When we finally do get word on whether we've been approved or not, the summer holiday season may be drawing to a close, and people will be around to hear the news;
#9: Not knowing is marginally better than getting a "no" answer. A "NO" is still a distinct possibility, although we try hard not to dwell on that!
#8: Waiting gives us something to talk about... (though in fairness, if we got our answer - we'd have even more to talk about);
#7: While we are waiting, we can get ready for the eventual answer - so we can spring into action immediately;
#6: Getting the answer too soon might look bad to other stations - some of whom may have been waiting longer than us for their answers...
#5: I have more time to weed the garden that I wouldn't have if we had received our answer already;
#4: All this waiting is building anticipation... ?
#3: All this anticipation is stimulating the pleasure centres in our brains...?
#2: Waiting makes you thin...? (I'm really reaching here...);
#1: Okay... Okay... I have no bloody idea why it could possibly be a good thing to have to wait one minute longer!
All joking aside, Rick is being his usual stoic, stalwart self... no amount of delay ever seems to get him too worked up. He just quietly responds to the plethora of daily calls and emails from supporters, asking "have you heard anything yet...?"
Me - I come from a long line of excitable, Celtic females... and by gosh and Begorra, I'm wanting answers!
But, what I want and what actually happens are two totally different things, so here I am... sitting and waiting... and here I'll be when the answer eventually does materialize. It goes without saying that we'll let you know as soon as we hear something, but in the meantime, I'll be sending "positive answer" energy vibes in the general direction of the CRTC main office. Feel free to do the same!

Hockey & Lacrosse Equipment Swap!
Dave Eccleston & Frankie Rocca, the hosts of The Rock & Stone Sport Show are quite a pair of guys. Not only are both of them husbands and Fathers with full time jobs... not only do they co-run BluePrint Hockey School in their spare time... not only do they work tirelessly on The Rock & Stone Sport Show to help spread the news of sports happenings in our community - but now they've decided the greater Caledon community will benefit from a Hockey/Lacrosse Equipment Swap! And in typical Dave & Frankie fashion, they aren't doing this thing half way!
The Rock & Stone Sport Show & BluePrint Hockey School -in partnership with Radio Caledon - are proud to announce the 1st Annual Hockey/Lacrosse Equipment Swap!
The Swap is scheduled for the weekend of August 2nd and 3rd at the Caledon East Hockey Complex. Things will get underway at 10:00am and continue til 5:00pm both days.
In a "green" community like Caledon, it makes sense to recycle these products by holding this swap each year. And since the cost of skates can be $800 and sticks can run $300, the Swap will greatly help parents defray the costs associated with having kids involved in sports.
There will be many vendors, games and prizes throughout the weekend. All equipment to be offered for sale will be registered for $5.00/piece and 10% of final sale will go back to our chosen charity, CALEDON COMMUNITY SERVICES. Any companies or businesses that may be interested in being vendors during the show should contact Dave Eccleston at rockandstone@radiocaledon.com
Rock and Stone are also open to companies/businesses who would consider bringing SPECIAL EVENT TEAMs and donating some time on the weekend to help to make this an annual event in our community and give it some great exposure.
Caledon is surrounded by close to 50,000 registered minor hockey players who can benefit from a nice drive out of the city to attend an amazing event similar to the O.M.H.A. FUN FEST that is put on every year
If you have questions or would like to help out with the swap, please give the boys a call at 905-951-BUZZ or email them at rockandstone@radiocaledon.com |

Kari & Kate Take on Mid-Days!
We've added a mid-day program since our last newsletter, and wanted to take a moment to introduce you to Kari McKenna (hosting on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) and Kate Davis (who rounds out the week, hosting on Thursdays and Fridays).
 In addition to being a full time wife and mother to two beautiful little girls, Inglewood resident Kari McKenna has discovered a love of radio broadcasting. Kari is known to many of our listeners as one of the two wonderful ladies responsible for putting together Good Works (a show highlighting charitable & non-profit endeavors in Caledon). Currently honing her skills with courses at Humber College, Kari will be leaving Good Works to host the B105.5FM's Mid Day Show on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week. Kari can be reached at kari@radiocaledon.com
 Kate Davis is a self-professed music fanatic and claims that she has a slight tendency to ramble (we don't think so, Kate!), so her transition into the realm of radio was an increasingly natural one.
A fifth year student at University of Western Ontario specializing in Media Studies, Kate will be traveling to Lancaster, England to study for a semester in the upcoming scholastic year, where she plans to indulge in the thriving music scene and use the term 'loo' in it's proper geographic setting. In her spare time, Kate volunteers her writing for numerous publications, paints, plays sports, watches movies, and hangs out with her peeps. Kate is extremely excited to be hosting the Mid Day Show on Thursdays and Fridays, and can be reached at kate@radiocaledon.com
In the car, running errands, making lunch, around the house... now you can enjoy B105.5FM's mid-day mix of Great music, Traffic, Weather, Local Happenings, Coming Events, Horoscopes, Celebrity Gossip - With Kari McKenna & Kate Davis!

Christmas in July? Not really, but...
So, slather on some sunscreen, slap on a hat and... plan a Christmas Show? Sound a bit odd? Here at Radio Caledon, that's all part of "business as usual"!
 We're hard at work planning the First Annual "Gifts Yule Love" Christmas Shopping Show, that will be taking place at Rotary Place (Behind the Caledon Center for Recreation & Wellness) from 10- 3 on November 29th and will feature 2 full rooms of one-stop Holiday Shopping.
Gifts Yule Love will provide local retailers and service providers with a unique way to reach more Christmas shoppers, while offering a fun, seasonal activity that locals can enjoy to help kick off the "holiday" season! We're providing an opportunity for local consumers to shop for their Christmas Gifts in a festive atmosphere, perusing the products of local businesses - all under one roof, with lots of free parking and a nominal admission fee.
Though its early days yet, we're planning to have a Christmas tree decorated with ornaments donated by local "celebs", that we'll sell tickets on and raffle off - with the proceeds going to the local "Santa Fund". We also plan to ask visitors to the show to bring non-perishable food items for the food bank. In addition to retailers and gift certificates from local service providers, we'll have a craft & artisan corner, live entertainment, prizes, and lots of holiday spirit! We'll be broadcasting live and rumour has it that the "Jolly Old Elf" himself will be making an appearance!
Vendors in the show will also receive bonus radio commercials as part of the package. If you are interested in more information about the show, drop us a line - info@giftsyulelove.com! | |
So there you have it - another update from Radio Caledon! Once again, we want to take a moment to welcome the new advertisers who have joined the Radio Caledon family this month. We look forward to working with you!
Hopefully next newsletter will bring an answer to our repeater application... But for now... back to the "airwaves"! |

Sincerely,

Shelly Sargent
