The Naked Vine
Everything happens over wine...
and it all begins at
The Naked Vine!

Did you know that The Naked Vine is not only a brew on premise wine store?  They now carry a wide variety of giftware and specialty items for all your needs.  Unique items, ... such as the Eisch "Breathable" Glass and  "no drip"decanters!!

Check out our new candles! Instead of burning down and losing it's shape, you replace an oil pod in the centre-leaving your candle as beautiful as the day you bought it! Proceeds of these candles support Hospice Caledon in their endeavours to support our community!

Thinking about summer wines?  Start a batch of wine at
THE NAKED VINE in the month of April and we will donate $5.00 to support Theresa Heslin, part of a group of women called "Rambling Roses" who will be walking in Calgary for "The Weekend to End Breast Cancer".

Repeating Ourselves
by Shelly Sargent

eggs in nestIt appears the winter of my discontent is finally on the run!  In the past few days, we've had sunshine, warm temperatures and robins!

And I'm proud to report I've already rescued one turtle crossing Castlederg Side Road.  (Turtle rescue, in case you didn't know, earns you temporary "hero status" in the eyes of your kids and appreciative nods from other motorists.  I'm not so sure the turtles are all that happy about it, but I have to assume that if they knew the alternative, they would be!)

Even those of us who live in shady locations have at least one tender shoot peaking happily at us from our gardens by now.  And when looking into the distance, you now glimpse a faint haze of soft green on the trees - a harbinger of the beautiful leaves we'll see bursting forth in days to come!

Ah - Spring!  It is all about growth, births, awakenings.  And Radio Caledon is no exception - we have all three things taking place!

First of all, growth:  We are currently working on a project that should see some significant improvements to the 105.5FM signal in Bolton.  These improvements should happen by mid to late May.

Also, in response to requests and feedback from our listeners, Radio Caledon has recently applied to the Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for permission to convert 102.7FM into a "repeater", which would re-broadcast the programming of 105.5FM The "B" in Bolton to the north-east Caledon area, including Palgrave, Caledon East, and Cedar Mills.

While not exactly "growing" our signal, this application will accomplish much the same thing.  If approved, Radio Caledon would be able to simultaneously broadcast the same music and information programming to both Bolton (on 105.5FM) and to north-east Caledon (on 102.7FM).  This latest application was gazetted (made public) by the CRTC on April 9th, and we hope to have their decision by mid-summer.  For this application to succeed, we really need assistance from the community in the form of support letters to the CRTC.  If you would like to assist us and support our application, we would be very grateful - please CLICK HERE .

Secondly, we have births:  (and no... there's no little "Sarge" on the way!)  We're birthin' radio show!  And plenty of them.

We've got proposals for shows about volunteerism, music and horses... we've had pitches for fitness shows, psychic shows, and shows about wellness.  We've even had some interest in an old fashioned "radio mystery" show.  In fact, we've had so much interest, it'll be months before they all make it to the air!  All these potential shows, plus those already in the works will be rolling out in the coming months, as program outlines are created, guests are signed and production is started.

Speaking of shows - be watching for 105.5FM's new morning show - Breakfast with the "B" - which should debut sometime in May.  And last but certainly not least, we'll be going online with streaming audio within the next few weeks - which should assist us in providing some presence to the western part of Caledon - something we have wanted from the very beginning, but have had to table for the time being, due to technical and geographical limitations.

And third, we have new awakenings;  The community is awakening to the incredible potential of this new (to Caledon) communications tool we are offering.

Listeners are awakening to the fact that - as a form of entertainment and communications - radio is inclusive, inspiring and loads of fun.  There are contests, interviews with local personalities and information that is local and timely.

Business is awakening to the knowledge that - as a local advertising medium - radio offers the opportunity to broadcast an immediate message to the community.  And radio works very well as a "complementary" form of information and advertisement:  its secret strength is in reinforcing information that listeners may already have seen in local print media, flyers or local signage.

So - yes:  Spring has sprung all over - including here at Radio Caledon.  We're as busy as "bees" (pun very definitely intended) and we are looking forward to the coming months.
Earth Day 2008 - April 22nd
Earth Day LogoEarth Day 2008 takes place on April 22nd.  Following closely on the heels of a very successful Earth Hour, most of us don't need too much of a reminder about things we could do to mark Earth Day...

However, you can visit the Earth Day website - www.earthday.ca for more information on ways to conserve energy and Earth Day events in our area.

While surfing the Earth Day site, I happened upon the following info and thought you might be interested:

Save Paper, Win a Toyota Prius
Between March 1st and May 31st, 2008, Rogers and their partner, Canada Post, will donate $1 to Earth Day Canada for every person who switches from paper billing to electronic billing.

These people will also be entered into a draw to win a Toyota Prius, one of 50 Dell laptop computers or one of 100 LG Shine phones.   Visit www.rogers.com and switch today!

Talk about a win-win proposition!  If you've been considering going "paperless", now might be a good time to make the switch!  Just be warned - if you win the Prius, I'm going to be very jealous!
THE CALEDON HOME SHOW

The 22nd annual Caledon Home Show took place on April 18, 19 and 20th at the Don Sheardown Memorial Arena, in Bolton, amid record setting temps and bright sunshine.

Caledon Home Show Image
The home show, put on annually by the Caledon Chamber of Commerce and sponsored this year by Woody's Building Products, truly featured something for everyone:  There was the very popular RBC sponsored Penny Raffle;  a fundraising BBQ run by the Pathfinders;  D.A.R.E. representatives were onsite with info and a colouring contest;  on-site draws featured great prizes like wine fridges, jewellery and BBQ's.

The Career Coach - a free mobile resource centre providing career counselling and job search assistance, was parked on-site during Friday and Saturday.  And of course the Monster Book Sale was held by the Friends of the Caledon Public Library on Friday and Saturday as well.

As always, the main draw was the fact that over 80 local businesses exhibited at the show, providing information and specials at their booths.  And this year, Radio Caledon was proud to be broadcasting live from the show!

Wrap Up:  SuperCities Walk For MS
SuperCities Walk For MSOn April 13th, we participated in the Supercities Walk for MS with our 15 member "B" Team.    It was a wonderful experience, and we are proud to report that we managed to surpass our fundraising goal of $1800!  Not bad for a first year team!

While it would have been nice to walk in balmy 20 degree weather - we were quite comfortable in our "bee" togs, despite a chilly temp of only plus 3!  Thankfully, there was no sign of the rain they'd threatened us with for the week leading up to the walk!

We want to take a moment to thank the people who supported us with pledges, as well as those who contributed by being part of the "B" Team.  And we want to say a special thanks to The Naked Vine, Hatch Ideas, and Cowhide Promotions for their assistance and creative input!  It was gratefully appreciated.

The "B" Team's unofficial total for pledges raised was $2287.00, and on Walk Day, the MS Society's Bolton/Caledon Total was over $81,000, with many online pledges not included in the total.  Organizers were confident that we would reach our regional goal of $90,000 when all the totals are in!

I'm sure we'll be participating in the walk again next year!  Thanks again for your support, and if you didn't get a chance to put in a donation to support MS Research, you can still donate by visiting www.mssociety.ca!

There's so much going on - in the world and in our community!  Even after preparing a fairly lengthy newsletter, I could easily go on at some length about so many more worthy and interesting events coming up!

But in the interest of brevity, I'll close here.  I will - however - suggest that you may want to visit our website
and listen to the station to get the "down-low" on all the other things going on in Caledon & Bolton!

And on a personal note, I just want to say a word of thanks to those of you who have emailed & called me with kind words on how much you are enjoying The Buzz Newsletter.  I wasn't expecting that type of feedback, and I appreciate the support!  I'm truly enjoying the process of creating the newsletter - so its nice to know that you are enjoying reading it!

And one final thought:  If you have a radio related topic or a question for Radio Caledon, drop us a quick email and we'll see if we can squeeze it into an upcoming issue.

Thats it for this now.  Back to the "airwaves"!
Sincerely,
Shelly Sargent
