EARTH HOUR - Are You In? By Shelly Sargent
This is a special edition of The BUZZ, being sent out to make sure as many people as possible know about Earth Hour. Please take a moment to read on, and forward this email newsletter to anyone you feel would like to know more about Earth Hour:
We've known for years that Caledon is the greenest...
and now - according to an article by Kate Lunau in the March 12th issue
of Macleans Magazine; "Of the 100 biggest cities or regions in Canada,
Caledon is the safest". We live in a wonderful place, to be sure!
Now lets expand on all that, and take it a step further!
Originating in Sydney in 2007, the Earth Hour campaign has now gained
global attention. As a result, at 8 pm on March 29th, 2008, millions
of people in some of the world's major cities will unite and switch off
for Earth Hour.
And I'm sure you won't be surprised to find out that the Town of Caledon is already a registered participant in Earth Hour!
Earth Hour... EVERYONE can get involved
in some way. Mom & Dad: turn off the lights, the tv, the
coffeemaker... The kids: no
computer, no Wii, no Nintendo... Teens - no phone, no MSN, no
email.... Grandpa & Grandma: shut off the electric blanket, the
electric kettle, the radio - gasp... did I just say that?! :) In
short, if it's not essential - shut it down, unplug it, don't use it.
Radio Caledon would like to challenge you to make Earth Hour a priority
in your house and an event with your neighbours... go outside during Earth Hour, light candles and listen to the glorious lack of noise.
Don't drive anywhere during Earth Hour. Don't "DO" anything... just
"BE" for one hour. Take that hour to reflect on what the earth means
to you. Take that hour to teach your children how fragile the earth's
ecosystem is, and what the earth means to them. And be proud of
yourself - for one whole, glorious hour, you will be doing NOTHING to
contribute to global warming or climate change!
Now I know I am likely preaching to the converted here: the remarkable thing about the residents of Caledon - they always do
more than just pay lip service to conservation. And that is why I am assuming that most of the people
receiving this email will already be signed up for Earth hour and will have a "plan" for what they intend to do.
But for those of you who haven't had a chance to sign up yet, here's the link to the Earth Hour website: http://www.earthhour.org/earth-hour-every-day
This site is swimming with great ideas on how to maximize your Earth
Hour experience. But more importantly, it gives you ways to maximize
your lifetime conservation experience.
Because all this Earth Hour talk raises some important questions about how
much any of us really participate in true conservation? Sure, we
recycle our plastics and papers. We compost, use cloth grocery bags and buy items that
have less packaging.
But what about all the other things in our lives that are wasteful...?
The insidious little things we do day-in and day-out - that we may not
even notice? Things like leaving mobile phone chargers, TVs, microwaves, MP3
players -which are not being used and are on standby - plugged in? Or what about the things we can replace with "green alternatives" as they need it - like vehicles or windows?
And what about even more
abstract things like buying recycled paper, cards, napkins, tissues?
Making sustainable, green companies part of your investment portfolio
and supporting the many "green" companies that populate our community?
Buying local produce in season, to support local businesses and reduce
greenhouse emissions from transport vehicles??
Perhaps the thing we - as individuals - need to do is each institute a
"weekly" Earth Hour. Spend one hour of each week thinking about ways
we can reduce our individual and collective "energy footprint". Here's
a link to a one-minute footprint calculator
that you might find helpful. If you come up with a unique idea for reducing your energy footprint, email
it to us and we'll share it with our listeners - on the air, on our
website and in the newsletter.
And please be sure to join us for Earth Hour, and spread
the word among your friends, family and co-workers. And let's give
Caledon one more title to wear proudly - lets make Caledon the
community with the smallest "energy footprint" too!
Thanks for listening and have a great Earth Hour!

SuperCities Walk For MS
The MS Walk is fast approaching - it takes place on April 13th. Most of us know someone who's been touched by this debilitating disease. RADIO CALEDON and its team THE "B" TEAM will be doing the 5 km walk on April 13th, to raise money for MS Research. We see this as a great opportunity to support a very worthy cause, introduce our rapidly growing little Radio Caledon Team to each other, and raise community awareness - all at the same time. We invite you to support us with an online pledge! You can visit our team fundraising page by clicking HERE. Thanks for your support!

Our regular issue of the BUZZ will be coming to you in April.
In that issue, we'll feature information on where we'll be in the next few weeks as well as the next round of programming additions and an update on our ongoing quest to increase the signal strength/coverage of The "B"! Have a great week!
